Niche is based in St. Louis city and is expected to open at Centene Plaza in the spring.

Gerard Craft, an innovative chef and businessman, is bringing his restaurant Niche to Centene Plaza in Clayton. While some St. Louis city residents might feel a sense of abandonment—Niche is leaving its original location at 1831 Sidney St. in Benton Park—Craft remains the owner of the building in Benton Park and has no plans to sell: His parents own a condominium above the restaurant space. Niche will remain in operation at its original location until it opens in the spring of 2012 in Clayton. Craft is a multifaceted person who pushes his limits and in turn receives great rewards for his efforts. His Craft Restaurants Ltd. owns Niche, Brasserie by Niche and Taste. Authentic Cuban Recipes to Spice Up Your Christmas

Cuba's history, people and traditions bring depth and flavor to Christmas recipes whose ingredients are available in Clayton and Richmond Heights.

Introducing flavorful and interesting foods or decorations from other countries can make an American celebration more colorful. The ingredients for some delicious dishes are available in local Clayton and Richmond Heights stores such as Straub's and Schnucks. Residents of southern Italy celebrate with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, abstaining from meat for the entire meal. Delicious dishes made with mussels, clams, salt cod, eel and more replace the meat. In the Provence region of France, locals also abstain from meat and additionally end with 13 desserts that represent Jesus Christ and the 12 apostles. Quite the opposite happened in Cuba before Fidel Castro took power: Residents celebrated by roasting an entire pig. Cuba's tumultuous …

Break-N-Egg Diner Offers Food with Mediterranean Flair

The restaurant operated by Rudy and Barbara Sirkeci relocated to Clayton from Ballwin in May.

If you need respite from St. Louis County Circuit Court or just a friendly face before the daily grind, you can find them at Break-N-Egg Diner, 7814 Forsyth Blvd. in Clayton. Rudy Sirkeci and his wife, Barbara, moved the diner to Clayton in May from its home in Ballwin. Sirkeci began his restaurant career at the tender age of 9 in his father's restaurant in Ankara, Turkey, washing dishes while standing on egg crates. "The sink looked so big, I was afraid I would fall in," Sirkeci joked. He arrived in the U.S. through a series of jobs on Air Force bases. Sirkeci eventually returned to the food business, managing Robata of Japan. He learned front-of-the-house restaurant operations, gaining knowledge and confidence. "I thought, if I can …

Wine-Bar Amendments Mulled in Clayton

The Clayton Plan Commission and Architectural Review Board proposed amending city zoning regulations to allow wine bars this month.

Would you be surprised to know there are no wine bars in Clayton? Businesses that have the words "wine bar" in their title—think Sasha's or Remy's—are actually considered restaurants under the city's zoning regulations. Taverns and bars are not permitted, either. But wine bars could soon be allowed. At a public hearing Aug. 15, the city's Plan Commission and Architectural Review Board considered the issue. It recommended that regulations be amended by the Clayton Board of Aldermen to include a definition of a wine bar and to establish criteria permitting wine bars in certain commercial areas of Clayton. Under the proposed changes, a wine bar would be defined as "a type of restaurant with a floor area not exceeding 1,500 gross square feet …

Lake Forest Confections Makes Chocolate with Craftsmanship, Respect

Dan Abel Sr. and Dan Abel Jr. own the business, which is located on Clayton Road.

The secret behind Lake Forest Confections, 7801 Clayton Rd., is employees' craftsmanship, loyalty, and respect and appreciation for one another's strengths and talents—not to mention the delicious and addictive chocolate that draws Clayton residents inside. In a nutshell, the store's history has led to this: A group of multigenerational chocolatiers is working to provide St. Louis with some of the highest-quality artisan chocolate in the Midwest. The owners of Lake Forest are Dan Abel Sr. and Dan Abel Jr., who bought the store from Maynard "Bud" Kolbrener in December 2009. Kolbrener opened the store in 2004 to create jobs for former employees in need. The Abel family has been in the chocolate business for decades. It owns two other …
