Missouri's First Female Veterinarian Dies

Visitation for Suzanne Saueressig is today at Ambruster-Donnelly.

The first female veterinarian for the Humane Society of Missouri, a Richmond Heights resident died last week.  Dr. Suzanne Saueressig Riegel died Feb. 8, 2013, at St. Mary’s Health Center. Dr. Saueressig, as she was known professionally, started working at the Humane Society in 1955, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  She was born in Nuremberg, became a nurse during World War II and was drafted into the German army. American forces held her after the war as a prisoner of war. Once released, she returned to school to train as a veterinarian.
