Party-goers hit the streets of downtown Clayton for the first Parties in the Park event of the 2012 season.
Parties in the Park kicked off Wednesday evening as hundreds gathered in downtown Clayton for one of the best street parties in the city, now in its 29th year. Attendees enjoyed live dance music from Slam and David Ramon Zamudio featuring selections from the last three decades. Streetside restaurants and vendors offered food, beer and cocktails. For the second year in a row, the event returned to Meramec Avenue between Forsyth Boulevard and Maryland Avenue. Barriers kept traffic from the street, allowing people to stroll leisurely with friends. Comfy lounge areas included large cushioned couches, love seats and chairs. Meanwhile, the Clayton Chamber of Commerce is planning a golf outing May 17 in Forest Park.
Chambers of commerce in Richmond Heights and Clayton are planning several events over the next two weeks. In Richmond Heights, SSM St. Mary's Health Center will host networking, lunch and a brief private tour for Chamber members and guests. The event costs $15 per person and begins at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 9 in meeting rooms 1 and 2 on the hospital's second floor. The hospital's president, Kate Becker, will speak as part of the event. Attendees may use valet parking or the hospital's DeMun Avenue garage. The series of outdoor happy hours in downtown Clayton is in its 29th year.
Parties in the Park will return to downtown Clayton's North Meramec Avenue for its 29th season starting May 9, a news release issued Tuesday states. The outdoor happy hours are held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month through Sept. 12. They occur between Forsyth Boulevard and Maryland Avenue. “The response to last year’s move to downtown Clayton was unanimous," stated Ellen Gale, executive director of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, in the release. Residents of Clayton, Richmond Heights and other cities are being invited to explore Istanbul, Turkey, this fall as part of a trip sponsored by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. "What I've heard about Istanbul is that it's an ancient city with an urban feel of today," said Ellen Gale, the Chamber's director. "It's kind of mixing old and new. It spans two continents." The Chamber announced the trip Feb. 14 in an email alert. Participants will depart Nov. 7 and return Nov. 15. The trip is open to the public.
