Greyhounds and Blue Devils Compete at State Wrestling Championships

Maplewood Richmond Heights ended Thursday tied for eighth place in Class 1 competition, while Clayton wrapped up the day tied for 37th in Class 2.

COLUMBIA — Wrestling fans from across the state speckled the typically gold-filled seats of Mizzou Arena all day Thursday for the 81st Missouri State Wrestling Championships. It took eight simultaneous matches at a time, but all four different classes completed their first round matches and also their consolation rounds, also known as wrestlebacks. “There are a lot of logistics that go into it,” said Jason West, communications director for the Missouri State High School Activities Association. “We have over 1,600 matches over the next three days. There are four classes. There’s a lot of planning.” Midway through the first day of competition, West said he thought everything was running smoothly. “The good thing is that this particular …

Two Clayton Wrestlers Quality for State Tournament

It's the first time the Greyhounds have sent wrestlers to the Columbia event in two years.

Clayton Greyhounds wrestlers Caleb Grady and Ed Davis broke new ground this season. Grady, a junior, and Davis, a sophomore, were the first wrestlers from Clayton to qualify for the state tournament in two years. In addition, this year marks the first time since 1999 that the Greyhounds have sent more than one competitor to state. “This is a big boost for us, and getting two people through was a big plus,” Clayton wrestling coach Doug Verby said.   The top four wrestlers in each district tournament in the state of Missouri qualify for the state tournament in Columbia, MO. Davis placed third in the 112-pound weight class Saturday in the Class 2 District 2 Tournament at John Burroughs High School, while Grady placed fourth at 125. Davis was …

Greyhounds Place 8th in Brentwood Wrestling Tournament

Henry, Bradley both earn 2nd Place Medals

Although the Clayton Greyhounds wrestling team managed only an eighth-place finish in the 10-team Brentwood Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 18, both Jordan Henry and Joe Bradley made the most of the opportunities that the ultra-competitive tournament provided. Henry, who wrestled in the 145-pound weight class, and Bradley (171) each earned a second-place medal. Bradley faced off against Notre Dame's Trevor Fultz in the championship round. Fultz won the match on points. Bradley finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. "I could have worked better for takedowns," Bradley said. "I've been missing some practices due to my knee (injury), and I need to work on some conditioning, too." Bradley said the second-place finish represents …

Clayton defeated Vashon and Maplewood Richmond Heights on Dec. 9. Meanwhile, Maplewood Richmond Heights won against Vashon.

Clayton defeated the Maplewood Richmond Heights Blue Devils, 33-30, and the Vashon Wolverines, 57-6. Meanwhile, Maplewood Richmond Heights topped Vashon, 42-28. Clayton Wrestling Team Ties Chaminade in Season Opener

The Clayton High School wrestling team faced off against Chaminade on Nov. 30.

The Clayton Greyhounds wrestling team started off its season Nov. 30 by fighting the Chaminade Flyers to a tie in a contest at Clayton High School. Both teams finished with 36 points. The tie represented a victory of sorts for the Greyhounds, as they lost to the Flyers in 2009.  "It's nice to come up with a tie over a team like this," Clayton wrestling Coach Doug Verby said. "Chaminade has some very good wrestlers, but we have some very strong kids as well."  Caleb Grady, who wrestled in the 125-pound weight class, Delvin Anderson (140) and Roger Taylor (189) each earned wins for the Greyhounds as a result of a forfeit. Also for Clayton, Jordan Henry (152) defeated Chaminade's Mark Corwin, Joe Bradley (171) defeated Sam Diehl and Jonathan…

Clayton Wrestling Squad Boasts Experience, Work Ethic

Many members of the 30-man team have been participating for two or three years, Coach Doug Verby said.

Clayton Greyhounds wrestling Coach Doug Verby is hopeful that a more experienced squad, solid leaders and quality work ethic will help the program take steps down the path of success in the 2010-11 season.   "I'm impressed with the positive attitudes and people willing to work hard," Verby said. "Obviously, we don't have a ton of experience, but we were mostly freshmen and sophomores last year. If you look at our roster, most of these guys are two- and three-year wrestlers." Clayton's football team finished with an 8-4 mark this fall, and the wrestling and football programs share some of the same talent. The Greyhounds have two returning wrestlers with 30-plus wins: junior Jeffrey Rothenberg and senior Jordan Henry. Rothenberg wrestles in …
