Clayton Defeats U City for District Football Championship

Lions' last-second rally falls short, as Clayton claims second district title in last three years.

CLAYTON -- After missing an extra-point that could've tied Monday's Class 4 District 5 championship game at Clayton's Centene Stadium, the University City football team got the ball back with about two minutes left and no timeouts, with a chance to win the game. Unfortunately, the Lions weren't able to move the ball into scoring position, as Clayton's Tyler Walker intercepted U. City quarterback George Brown's final pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown, to clinch a 27-20 victory for the Greyhounds. Walker, who also had three touchdown runs for Clayton, scored four times for the second straight game, as the Greyhounds won their second district football title in the last three years. U. U City to Face Clayton for District Championship

The University City Lions take on the Clayton Greyhounds Monday night at 7 p.m.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) District 5 football championship tonight features two Mid-County schools. The University City High School Lions face the Clayton High School Greyhounds at 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $6 per person.  The winner advances to the Nov. 10 state quarterfinals. Clayton vs. University City Clayton, the number two seed in the Class 4, District 5 tournament, defeated Jennings in the first round. This week the Greyhounds, 8-3, will stay home to host University City.  Fourth-seeded University City, 7-5, made it into the championship with a win over top-seeded St. Charles West in the second round and Normandy in the first.
