Senior running back/linebacker Tyler Walker scored four times and nabbed a last-second interception to thwart U. City's final comeback attempt.
CLAYTON — In the end, Clayton just had too much Tyler Walker. Although the senior running back/linebacker stands just 5'7, and weighs 160 pounds soaking wet, he proved too much to handle Monday night at Centene Stadium, as University City valiantly fought, but couldn't get past the Greyhounds, in a 27-20 Class 4 District 5 championship game loss. Clayton, which is now 9-3 on the year, advances to play Jefferson City Helias in the state quarterfinals on Saturday. Helias pounded Hannibal (MO) on Monday, and will be the host team when it meets the Greyhounds at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. U. City finished its year with a 6-6 record, but will go into the offseason lamenting its missed chances against Clayton on Monday. The Lions were stopped on a …

The Greyhounds were conference and district champions last season, when they went 22-7. Now, the boys hope to defend those crowns when a new campaign begins with a trip to Rolla on Nov. 28.
For the Clayton High School boys varsity basketball team, last season was a magic carpet ride. It ended with a 22-7 record for the Greyhounds, a set of conference and district championship titles won on their home floor, and two players ending the year with all-state honors from the statewide coaches association. But that was last year, and stars Christian Thomas (Loyola University Chicago) and Ahmad Smith (Webster University) are now doing their thing in the college ranks. That means this season, new Greyhound talents will have to emerge. “Those two guys averaged nearly 45 points a game,” Clayton head basketball coach Ryan Luhning said. “So sometimes we could win games just with our offense. But I told the guys this year, we don’t have …

I’m getting two or three years' more experience than anyone else my age.” Brown said he’s learned a thing or two about the physical nature of the varsity game. “When you get hit, it hurts,” he said. “But you can’t really do anything about it, you’re the quarterback.” Brown has connected on 45 of 103 passes for 546 yards. He’s thrown four touchdown passes so far. “It’s a giant step up from the eighth grade,” he said about passing. “There’s reading involved, hundreds of…
