Lamping Addressed Domestic Violence; Cunningham Eyed Turner v. Clayton

These two Republican lawmakers in the Missouri General Assembly worked on legislation this session that affects residents of Clayton and Richmond Heights.

A Republican lawmaker who represents Clayton and Richmond Heights played a role in shaping this year’s session of the Missouri General Assembly. Meanwhile, another Republican lawmaker spearheaded an effort to provide some resolution to the ongoing debate over the court case Turner v. Clayton. The legislature ended its roughly five-month session on Friday, most notably adjourning without deals on sweeping changes to tax credit programs, local control of the St. Louis Police Department or a measure aimed at starting the process to build a nuclear power plant in Callaway County. The legislature did have a list of successful ventures, including ending the “franchise tax” on corporate assets and extending a prescription drug program to seniors…

MRH Track Team Weathers Rain to Capture Sectional Title

Maplewood-Richmond Heights won by a big margin, setting two school records despite soggy conditions.

Maplewood Richmond Heights (MRH) athletes persevered through constant chill and rain Saturday at the Class 1 and 2 sectional track meet at Principia High School. MRH and another local team held their positions from the previous district meet and are headed to state. The MRH boys won the sectional meet with 146 points, and the next closest team was Herculaneum with 86. The Principia boys garnered 77 for fourth place. Principia coach Jamie Bolinger said nearly everyone on the boys team who qualified for sectionals at the district meet advanced to state. MRH will six girls and 10 boys to the state meet from Saturday's sectionals. Sending boys is nothing new for MRH, but six girls going is big. Coach Brandon Gregory said that in the last two …

Mother and Daughter Open Clayton's First Bridal Gown Boutique

A ribbon-cutting happened Thursday for Fleur De Lis Bridal, which opened in January.

Fleur De Lis Bridal Boutique is one of the newest bridal boutiques in the St. Louis area and the only such business in Clayton. The boutique at 8109 Maryland Ave. offers gowns by high-end designers such as Rivini and Elizabeth Fillmore, and headpieces and jewelry by designers such as Erin Cole. But what stands out most about the shop is its ownership: Fleur De Lis Bridal came about through a dream shared by a mother and her daughter. Connie Lucks and her daughter, Kristin Lucks Shelton, have always been businesswomen. But they had so much fun planning Kristin's wedding that they began to consider making weddings a part of their living. "We wanted to follow our dream," Connie Lucks said. "With my experience and background in purchasing, and…

Bravura Performance Lifts 'Midsummer Night's Dream' To Heavens

Grace Austin's flawless performance as Titania provided the icing on the Missouri Ballet Theatre's rich ballet cake on Friday at the Edison Theatre in Clayton.

It wasn't midsummer, but it did seem like a dream when the Missouri Ballet Theatre presented the classical ballet version of Shakespeare's play at the Edison Theatre at Washington University on Friday night. The production featured a beautiful set, clever choreography and heavenly dancing. The ballet attempts to tell one of Shakespeare's more complicated stories. It involves faeries, a love potion, unrequited love and star-crossed lovers. Of course, everything is rectified in the end, and the characters live happily ever after. In the ballet, the plot is difficult to follow. Don't try too hard. Just enjoy some of the truly excellent aspects of this production. Most notably is Grace Austin's performance as Titania, so stunning it's …

A note from Adam Sage informs me that he is, in fact, the choreographer of the ballet, and that it is a world premier. Kudos to Mr. Sage for his excellent work.   more ›

Clayton Girls Soccer Team Ends Regular Season With 1-0 Win

The team defeated Whitfield on Thursday.

The Clayton Greyhounds girls soccer team finished off its regular season on a high note with a 1-0 victory over the Whitfield Warriors at Whitfield on Thursday. Freshman midfielder Abby Rivard scored Clayton’s goal relatively late in the game with 14:14 left to play. Rivard took a pass from forward Meg Sutter. She then used her right foot to kick the ball into east side of the goal. Rivard has five goals this season. “It’s always exciting to score,” Rivard said. “It pumps you up as well as the entire team.”   Clayton coach Paul Hoelscher said his team controlled the ball throughout the game through quality passing. He also credited the Warriors’ swarming defense for limiting Clayton’s scoring opportunities. “Whitfield is a very well-…

Exploring State Expenditures? Welcome to the Labyrinth

Information about how much Missouri spends yearly can be three financial reports — and woe to the person who tries to make sense of them.

Patch is pleased to partner with Brian R. Hook, editor and investigative reporter for Missouri Watchdog, a news website dedicated to investigative journalism about local, state and federal government across Missouri. We've invited Hook to contribute a weekly column that describes what he's watching and why it's important for Missouri taxpayers. How much does the Show-Me State spend each year? There is no easy answer to that question, I am constantly told when I ask how much the Missouri government spends annually. Inevitably, I am also warned each time not to compare apples to oranges. There are numerous financial reports floating around the halls of state government, all with different numbers. Then analysts and experts are always …

Baby Countdown Underway With a Cry

My wife is less than 30 days from her due date, and I can already hear the child's cries ringing in my ear.

This is my new refrain: "Is the baby coming?" So far, my wife hasn't poked me for asking too much. I think the question is a product of being antsy. We've got 25-odd days left to go before Julie's due date, and, at times, each passes like a year. I know I'm supposed to enjoy the process. I know I should savor each hour and its beauty, just as I should appreciate the dew that forms on flower petals in the morning or the way the moon rises in the night sky. But come on. I'm impatient. Nonetheless, life goes on, and we reach milestones regularly. On Tuesday, we wrapped up our newborn care class. Our teacher ended the six-week session by saying that all of us had passed, and everyone laughed. I laughed, then panicked. The baby doll lying on …
