Math Curriculum Update Draws Questions on Textbooks, Teaching Styles

The Clayton Board of Education is expected to receive a final draft of the review in June. Changes in the district's curriculum have been in the making for nearly six years.

The Clayton Board of Education received a much-anticipated final update on the district’s math curriculum review Wednesday night, and board members made sure to make one thing clear: This is the beginning of a complex process. The board received the update from Dottie Barbeau, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning; Heidi Shepard, the district’s director of assessment and mathematics; parent Ruth Hall; and teacher Tyler Harger of the K-12 Math Committee. The presentation of the final review is expected in June. The group has been tasked with developing a curriculum comparable to others used internationally. Scores Place Clayton Students on Par with Those Around the World

The PISA test results are one indicator of the district's efforts to provide a globally competitive education, Superintendent Mary Herrmann said.

Clayton 15 year olds who participated in an internationally recognized assessment of college readiness scored higher, on average, than students of the same age in dozens of other countries and economies, according to data released Jan. 10 by the School District of Clayton. The results on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that "We are in a good place but that we need to work to sustain that," said Dr. Mary Herrmann, the district's superintendent. She said the district is committed to continually evaluating ways to help its students stay competitive in a global society. Clayton students who turned 15 between Sept. 1, 2009 and Aug. 31, 2010, on average, scored highest on the mathematics portion of the test at 582, …
