How Property Owners Can Get Free Trees in Richmond Heights

It's part of the Richmond Heights's celebration of its centennial this year.

Here's a cool way that Richmond Heights officials are marking the city's centennial.  The city is giving away 100 trees to property owners throughout the year, notes a news release. Residents will be able to choose from 22 types of trees.  Officials will deliver the trees and even help property owners pick an ideal location if they desire.  In addition to beautifying a property, planting more trees across the city will help reduce storm water runoff, stated Tim Brunsman, the city's forester, in the release.  “As trees get bigger, they intercept the rain and they absorb it, not only through the roots once it hits the ground, but they absorb it through their leaves,” Brunsman stated. “Trees filter some of the pollutants out of the water that…

Richmond Heights Tallies 100th Birthday Logo Input

Residents gave input last week about which design they prefer to commemorate the city's centennial in 2013.

Feedback about three possible logos to commemorate the 100th birthday of Richmond Heights will be compiled Monday. Residents shared their thoughts last week by dropping in at City Hall, voting online and attending Celebrate Richmond Heights. City Council, city staff and others already have provided input on the designs. The two votes cast in an unofficial Patch poll about the logos favored Option B, which features a blue-and-teal cupola with a spire. A summary of the findings will be presented to City Manager Amy Hamilton and then to the council. The logo will appear on city street signs, printed material and staff T-shirts. Starting Tuesday morning, the logos will be displayed in the lobby of City Hall, 1330 S. Big Bend Blvd. People who want to weigh in can request a sticker to place next to the design of their choice. Attendees of Celebrate Richmond Heights on Saturday will be able to do the same from 4 to 10 p.m. at The Heights community center. (Which logo is your favorite? Richmond Heights Veterans' Memorial Accepting Donations

The gazebo will be located outside of The Heights community center.

Donations are being accepted for a Veterans' Memorial Gazebo planned outside of The Heights community center along Dale Avenue. The Veterans' Memorial Committee also has launched a website, vetsmemorial.org, at which donations may be made. "While the Memorial will honor all major branches of military services and commemorate the various conflicts in which our nation has been engaged, individual tributes from friends and family will be available through the purchase of paver bricks to be laid within and around the Memorial," a news release issued Tuesday states. "Specific complementary features such as benches, flagpoles, reflective areas, lighting and landscaping can be sponsored as tax-deductible donations/contributions to the Memorial." …

Veterans' Gazebo Plan Draws Skepticism from Resident [POLL]

Harlie Frankel told Richmond Heights City Council this month that he thinks another St. Louis veterans memorial isn't an appropriate use of resources.

One Richmond Heights resident isn't thrilled about the prospect of placing a memorial gazebo honoring military veterans near The Heights community center. "I think it's a duplication of services," Harlie Frankel told City Council at its June 4 meeting. He said St. Louis already has a veterans memorial, a reference to Soldiers Memorial Military Museum in St. Louis city. That site honors World War I veterans and also hosts exhibits that pay tribute to veterans of other conflicts. A group of volunteers plans to raise funds to build a covered Veterans' Memorial Gazebo that would honor veterans and host small-scale events. The facility would be completed next year in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Richmond Heights. Frankel said he's …

What resources are being used if this is to be paid for by fundraising? Continuing to honor our veterans is a way to bring people of all kinds together and to celebrate our country and keeping our American spirit alive. Thank you Richmond Heights for doing something that is positive and for honoring our veterans.   more ›

Veterans' Gazebo Takes Shape in Richmond Heights

A design presentation will be made Thursday at The Heights community center.

Richmond Heights residents interested in getting a closer look at plans for a new Veterans' Memorial Gazebo can attend a meeting scheduled Thursday. "It's a very broad purpose," Chairman Ken Heinz of the 12-person Veterans' Memorial Gazebo Committee said this week. "This is not a war memorial, this is not a peace memorial, this is designed to honor all those who serve. And I think it has great functionality in that regard." The structure is expected to be located southwest of the circle drive outside The Heights community center, between the east and west parking lots. Its construction would coincide with the city's 100th anniversary next year. Design attributes include a roof with a peaked top similar to that on The Heights and the public…

Remember When: 1940 Richmond Heights City Map

In this week's history moment, take a look at buildings that would have been easy to spot 70 years ago.

As Richmond Heights and Clayton prepare to celebrate their 100th year in 2013, Patch is taking a look back through history. This week, we present a 1940 map of Richmond Heights that lists some familiar—and less familiar—public buildings. It's available online courtesy of the National Archives' Online Public Access website. (Zoom in on a larger map using the National Archives website.) The buildings listed on the map are: Can you tell us more about the history of the buildings identified on the map? Fill us in by posting a comment to this article or emailing a letter to the editor. Richmond Heights Centennial Planning Begins

The city's historical society is planning tours and a speaker series for 2013, while others are working on a large celebration paired with monthly events.

One large party, accompanied by a variety of monthly events, will serve as the cornerstone of 100th anniversary celebrations next year in Richmond Heights. Festivities likely would include a parade, carnival rides and music. That consensus came Thursday at The Heights during a centennial brainstorming session that included residents, city staff and elected officials. District 2 City Councilman Mike Jones is leading the effort and moderated the discussion. "We want to do it right," Jones said during his introduction. Historical society and library form partnership Vice President JoEllen Gamp McDonald of the Richmond Heights Historical Society told the audience that she has been coordinating centennial events with library director Jeanette …
