Love Notes: Paul and Betty Hayes Stayed Together with Work, Vacations

The residents of Sunrise on Clayton, in Richmond Heights, spoke about how they met and provided keys to a lasting relationship in conjunction with Valentine's Day on Tuesday.

In honor of Valentine's Day on Tuesday, Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch teamed up with Maplewood-Brentwood Patch to ask three committed couples about their lives together and what it takes to maintain a relationship. We visited Richmond Heights-based Sunrise on Clayton, home to approximately 80 senior residents. Here is some of what they told us. Paul and Betty Hayes Age: 88 Years married: 67 Anniversary: March 22, 1945 Formerly of: Dogtown Paul and Betty Hayes met in their mid-teens while attending Shelbina High School in northeast Missouri. Richmond Heights Book Club Explores Love and Marriage in New England-Based 'The Maytrees'

The Richmond Heights Memorial Library’s Book Club discussed the Annie Dillard novel at its March meeting.

Imagine yourself on the windswept sands of the open dunes of Provincetown, MA, on the curlicue tip of Cape Cod. Before Provincetown became an expensive tourist mecca, bohemians, artists and writers lived alongside fishermen and carpenters.  This is the setting of The Maytrees, by Annie Dillard, in which we follow the complicated love relationship between Toby and Lou Maytree. Themes of love, loss, solitude and forgiveness dominate the book. Dillard pointedly approaches nuanced questions about the nature and purpose of love and marriage throughout the work—though clear answers are few. This is a more literary work, and the discussion of the Richmond Heights Memorial Library’s Book Club followed that tone. Each of us had a mixed assessment …

Richmond Heights Volunteer's Work Inspires Drive for Baby Items

Alice Provaznik has been volunteering at SSM St. Mary's Health Center for more than 30 years.

SSM St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights continues to receive baby items as part of a special donation drive that began Monday. Hospital volunteers are collecting items such as onesies, booties, diapers and wipes to be used by underprivileged families. The items are for newborns up through children who are 9 months old. The Baby Shower event, sponsored by the SSM St. Mary's Mission Awareness Team and Volunteer-Auxiliary Organization, happened from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. "A lot has come in since yesterday," said Stacey Rynders, communications specialist with the hospital, on Tuesday. Hospital employees have been bringing in items at various times during their shifts.
