The 98-year-old has lived in the city since January 1952.

Ruth Berg thanked those who work for "the good health" of Clayton on Tuesday and reflected on her 60 years in the city during a meeting of the Board of Aldermen. Mayor Linda Goldstein read a proclamation declaring Tuesday as Ruth Berg Day. A number of people attended the first part of the meeting to support Berg. She spoke from the seat of Ward III Alderman Mark Winings, who couldn't be in attendance. Berg, 98, moved to Clayton in January 1952, Goldstein's proclamation states. She has children and grandchildren who attended Clayton High School. Berg's favorite grocer is Straub's, and her favorite restaurant is Remy's Kitchen & Wine Bar. Library Book Club Notes: 'Killer Angels' Reveals Commanders' Nuances

The Richmond Heights Memorial Library Book Club discussed Michael Shaara's Civil War novelization "Killer Angels" at its September meeting.

When the Richmond Heights Memorial Library's Book Club decided to look for a September book to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, we did not have to look far. Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara, is considered by many to be a modern masterpiece and easily one of the best Civil War novelizations available. That is high praise in a sub-genre so thoroughly explored. We had high expectations for this title, and for the most part those expectations were met. Each of us enjoyed the book, and while some liked it more than others, all had a positive review. In the brief introduction to the novel, Shaara notes that Stephen Crane wrote The Red Badge of Courage in part to understand the experience of war by imagining what…

PHOTOS: National Night Out Unites Richmond Heights Neighborhoods

The block parties happened Tuesday night throughout the city.

A total of 24 Richmond Heights neighborhoods hosted block parties Tuesday night as part of the National Night Out campaign, Officer Lyndsy Harrison of the Richmond Heights Police Department stated in an email. The event, which emphasizes the connections between residents and police in preventing crime, got pushed back earlier this year in an effort to avoid the excessive heat of summer. Residents of Moorlands Drive and of the 7500 block of Warner Avenue hosted such parties. Here's a look at the festivities. Did your neighborhood host a National Night Out event? Send photos to nate.birt@patch.com and we'll share them with our readers.

Clayton Man Among Medtronic's 25 'Global Heroes'

Ron Rubin received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator two years ago. Now, he's preparing for a major run in Minnesota.

Clayton resident Ron Rubin had been preparing to run his eighth marathon when, on Sept. 7, 2009, ventricular tachycardia—a rapid heartbeat—ended his plans. About one week later, he underwent surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. The device keeps tabs on his heart rate and can shock his heart to bring it back in check. Now, Rubin is preparing to run the Medtronic Twin Cities 10 Mile on Oct. 2. The company that sponsors the race also is recognizing Rubin and 24 other long-distance runners as Global Heroes. That means he and his wife, Pam, will receive VIP treatment, including expenses-paid travel and hotel and a luncheon with the other runners who, like Rubin, have received help from …

Families, Couples Gather to Celebrate Richmond Heights

The Saturday event welcomed attendees from Richmond Heights and surrounding communities.

A slight chill in the air and the chance of rain didn't keep residents of Richmond Heights and surrounding communities from attending the sixth annual Celebrate Richmond Heights event outside of The Heights community center on Saturday night. "We've been coming ever since they started this," said Sylvester Dunn, a Richmond Heights resident who came with his wife. Attendees heard live music from two bands. Blues-country band Gentlemen Bandits started playing at about 4:30 p.m., while Fabulous Motown Revue was scheduled to go on at 7 p.m. "We live in Richmond Heights, so we thought it would be good to come out to hear music, get some food and have some time at the playground," said Suzanne Tucker, who brought her kids to the event.
