Officers Interrupted Man Loading Stolen Items Into Car, Police Say

The man had broken into a home in the 8100 block of Westmoreland Avenue and his car was parked in the driveway.

An officer spotted a man loading his car with items he had just stolen from Clayton home in the 8100 block of Westmoreland Avenue at about 7:50 p.m. Nov. 18, police said. Rodney Dunlap, 45, of the 3500 block of Grer Avenue in St. Louis, was charged Nov. 19 with second-degree burglary and felony stealing. Clayton Police said an officer on patrol spotted Dunlap loading his car, which was parked in the victims’ driveway, with items he’d stolen from the house. The items included a flat-screen television, two laptop computers, 74 pieces of jewelry, and a watch. The items were valued at $4,600 according to the police report. Jewelry Thefts Reported in Richmond Heights

The items collectively are valued in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Jewelry valued in the tens of thousands of dollars has been reported stolen recently, the Richmond Heights Police Department reported. On July 17, a resident reported $21,000 in jewelry missing from a home on Scarsdale Lane. The resident filed the report two weeks after the incident occurred. Then on July 20, jewelry valued at more than $25,000 was reported stolen from a home in the 7900 block of Bennett Avenue. There were no signs of forced entry, and the residents could not account for any unusual activity, police said. The following day—July 21—a resident of Sunrise on Clayton, 7920 Clayton Rd., reported that two rings had been stolen within the past month from a jewelry box in her room.

Clayton Burglaries Prompt Multiple Charges for Man

The suspect was in one of the houses when homeowner's son walked in, police said.

A man has been charged in connection with three burglaries that happened last June in the same Clayton neighborhood. Robert Delp. Jr, 44, was charged Thursday with first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree burglary, second-degree robbery and stealing after burglaries in the 700 block of South Meramec Avenue, the 700 block of Middle Polo Drive and the 600 block of West Polo Drive. The houses are just blocks from one another. Delp is suspected of having broken into a home on South Meramec on June 21 and having taken some jewelry, at which point the homeowner’s son came in, Clayton police said in a report. Owner Says Destiny Wanted Diamond Shop in Clayton

Thom Kohn, owner of The Diamond Shop, explains how a century-old family business located in a 100-year-old Clayton building has stayed successful through the years.

The Diamond Shop is nestled in a century-old whitewashed brick building between JR Cigars and Mosaic Bistro Market. Owner Thom Kohn’s father, Joseph, moved the store from downtown St. Louis City to its Clayton location in 1986 because, in his son’s words, the elder Kohn fell in love with the neighborhood. While The Diamond Shop itself is more than a century old, the Kohn family didn’t take over until the late 1940s. Before World War II, Joseph Kohn worked in a jewelry store. When he returned from serving his country, he was eager to pick up where he left off. “My dad is a tremendous people person, so sales came naturally to him,” Thom Kohn said. “Back then, you either did manual labor or you wore a suit.
