A man drew the attention of the Richmond Heights Police Department this week after they said he performed martial arts moves on one of the city's major roads. It happened Monday in the 1000 block of Bellevue Avenue, the department reported in its crime blotter. Officials initially thought they were responding to a case of disorderly conduct. They quickly determined the man needed psychiatric attention, the blotter states, and he was taken to a St. Louis-area hospital for treatment. Anna Brown's death in a Richmond Heights jail cell has sparked a national conversation about racism and health insurance access.
The death of Anna Brown in a Richmond Heights jail cell has sparked a national conversation on Facebook, Twitter and Change.org about racism and health insurance access. Even a former Homeland Security official has expressed outrage about the case. Brown, 29, had received medical attention at several facilities including SSM St. Mary's Health Center, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday. Richmond Heights police arrested her there on suspicion of trespassing and took her to the jail in September "after a doctor said she was healthy enough to be locked up," the Post-Dispatch reported. Officials thought she might have been using drugs, the article states. She later died from blood clots, and an autopsy found no drugs in her body. Brown…

Three triplets born at SSM St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights were headed home Thursday, nearly two months after their delivery. The three Clemonds babies—Teegan Tyler, Chloe Aundrea and Hadley Lynn—arrived April 5 and spent some time in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit before going home in stages. Teegan got to leave first, followed by Chloe and, on Thursday, Hadley. "If I can handle these two crying, what's another one?" their mom, Jessie Clemonds, joked. She and her husband, Christopher, 34, live in Elsberry, MO. She arrived at the hospital Jan. 5 and spent three months on bed rest before her delivery. The couple conceived using in vitro fertilization. "I was shocked but excited," Jessie Clemonds said about learning…

Expectant St. Louis parents should know that taking care of a newborn is a lot like juggling: It involves balancing multiple complex tasks and occasionally messing up.
There are many factors to consider when changing a doll's diaper. Among them: I could go on. But at least on its face, the process appears simpler than I've indicated. Thankfully, Julie changed a fair number of her younger siblings' diapers while growing up and had the patience to coach me during our newborn-care class Tuesday. The instructor provided plastic tubs, including a diaper, a blue bulb syringe and a swaddling blanket. I and my male counterparts in the room provided the levity. Upon the instructor's cue, I immediately grabbed the prediapered doll and began lightly tugging at one of its sticky tabs. The goal: Change this fellow out of one piece of absorbent underwear and into another. Julie motioned for me to wait. She took the …

Nurses were among those who performed Thursday in Richmond Heights in conjunction with a competition sponsored by SSM Health Care.
SSM St. Mary's Health Center staff and a visitor belted out hits Thursday in Richmond Heights as part of a system-wide singing contest. The event, dubbed Mission Idol, is one of several aimed at getting staff excited about SSM Health Care's Mission Days celebration May 17-19, said Stacey Rynders, communications specialist at St. Mary's. That celebration focuses on reconnecting staff with the hospital system's mission statement: "Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God." Three contestants auditioned for a chance to perform in May as part of the Mission Days Show Choir, while others—such as a group of nursing directors and leaders—sang simply for fun, Rynders said. The performances will happen at …

The nine sculptures will be in place until the week of May 16.
Clayton is hosting nine colorful butterflies through mid-May as part of a fundraiser to benefit children with serious illnesses. Fifty-five butterflies have been placed throughout St. Louis county and city as part of the Wings in the City project to provide help for the BJC Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care program, Clayton communications coordinator Judy Kekich stated in an e-mail. Funds will go toward the expressive therapy program, which "provides clinical, emotional and spiritual support for children who have life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses, even if families cannot pay for the services," Kekich stated. Go to the project's Web site for more information about the project and a map showing the location of each butterfly. …
