Jane Klamer won a third term on the Clayton Board of Education on April 3.
*Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the time period for which the 2003 bond issue was projected to last. It was projected to last three years. This article has been updated to reflect the correct time period. Jane Klamer won re-election to her third term on the Clayton Board of Education on April 3. In the next three years, she wants to help guide the board through the implementation of a new math program. “Our math review took two years to complete and is now in its first year of its implementation,” Klamer stated in an email interview. “Basically, this was my entire second term. Given the importance of the subject, and the changes we made to our programs, I want to stay on the board through the …

The Clayton Board of Education received a much-anticipated final update on the district’s math curriculum review Wednesday night, and board members made sure to make one thing clear: This is the beginning of a complex process. The board received the update from Dottie Barbeau, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning; Heidi Shepard, the district’s director of assessment and mathematics; parent Ruth Hall; and teacher Tyler Harger of the K-12 Math Committee. The presentation of the final review is expected in June. The group has been tasked with developing a curriculum comparable to others used internationally. Its members have studied programs from places such as Singapore, Finland and Hong Kong. Where possible, they have …

The School District of Clayton has expanded students' linguistic horizons by offering a non-Western language.
Two years ago, just as Clayton schools' German language programs began to fade in popularity, a new contender emerged from the East. The Chinese language program in the School District of Clayton began in the 2008-09 school year with one class offered to students at Clayton High School and one to eighth-grade students at Wydown Middle School. Since then, the program has ballooned in size and scope to include 61 students in five Chinese language classes: Chinese I, II and III at the high school, and Chinese IA and IB at the middle school. "Clayton is very proud of its schools, and we continue to be proud of our graduates," said Christina Perrino, communications coordinator for the district. The Chinese language program "started because…
