Clayton Defeats Affton, 49-2, in Season's First Win

Tyler Walker, a junior, rushed for 175 yards and scored three touchdowns in a big football victory for the Greyhounds.

Desperate for a win after unfortunate showings in its first two games of this year's varsity football season, both the visiting Affton Cougars and host Clayton Greyhounds hoped Friday’s showdown at Gay Field would finally produce some desired results. Clayton got just what it wanted in a 49-2 win while Affton wound up with its worst loss of the year. “I’m just real happy for our kids,” Clayton head coach Scott Weissman said. “I mean, they came and felt like they had a job to do, and they got it done.” The team had a flurry of big plays, including a 53-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game by junior tailback Tyler Walker, which gave the Greyhounds a lead they never relinquished. Teammate Michael Turner capped a later drive by …

Clayton Greyhounds Wallop Affton Cougars, 49-2

Tyler Walker, a junior, scored three touchdowns in a blowout win for Clayton over Affton.

The Clayton Greyhounds got off to a quick start Friday night at Gay Field against Suburban East Conference rival Affton and never let up, scoring early and often in a 49-2 victory for the home team. Tyler Walker, a junior, had three touchdowns for the Greyhounds, who led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, and 35-0 at halftime, before grabbing an eventual 49-0 lead early in the fourth. Affton, whose roster features mostly underclassmen and has just six seniors, got its only points of the night in the final minutes of regulation when several Cougar defenders tackled a Clayton ballcarrier in his own endzone for a safety.   Please tune in to Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch later for the full story on Friday's Clayton win.

Game Preview: Clayton Seeks Season's First Football Win

The Clayton Greyhounds will play the Affton Cougars at home Friday night.

Two teams desperate for their first win of the season will meet up at 7 p.m. Friday at Gay Field when Affton (0-2) meets Clayton (0-2) in the Suburban East Conference opener for both teams. Affton will play its first game away from home after hosting Union and Priory in the first two weeks of the season. Clayton plays at home for the second straight week. The Greyhounds opened the season at Lutheran North, then played their home opener last week against St. Francis Borgia. None of those contests went well for Affton and Clayton. Affton lost big in both of its matchups and has scored just twice this season. Junior quarterback Jonah Boyd has one of those scores, while senior wide receiver Connor McNeil has the other. Unfortunately, neither …

'Mental Errors' Plague Clayton in Season-Opening Defeat

The Clayton Greyhounds open the football season with an away game at Lutheran North.

The Lutheran North Crusaders started out their fall campaign on a high note with a lopsided 42-14 non-conference win over the Clayton Greyhounds at Lutheran North on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind touchdowns from quarterback Glenn Bradford and wide receiver Anthony Virdure. “It always helps to come out and get on top first,” Crusader coach Mike Russell said. “We’re proud of the way the kids played. We have a lot to learn and a lot to improve on, but this is a good start.”  Lutheran North went up 20-0 just four seconds into the second quarter when Bradford passed the ball five yards into the end zone to Virdure. A successful extra point attempt made the score 21-0. Bradford played a …

Greyhounds Host Football Scrimmage in Clayton

The Burroughs Bombers, Duchesne Pioneers and DuBourg Cavaliers also participated in the event held at Gay Field.

Four St. Louis-area football coaches took their teams out for a test drive Friday at Gay Field in Clayton. The Clayton Greyhounds hosted the Burroughs Bombers, Duchesne Pioneers and DuBourg Cavaliers. For 90 minutes, teams got to test their new plays under a broiling sun. There wasn't any fall snap in the 92-degree heat. Referees got a chance to work together, coaches found out more about their teams, players got to hit people other than their own teammates and fans had a reason to come out on a hot night. Coach Scott Weissman is looking for all kinds of possibilities with Clayton. "The only sure thing I know is that we face Mike (Russell) and a very good Lutheran North team Saturday," he said. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lutheran …

Weissman Sees 'Skilled Athletes' on Clayton Football Team

The Clayton Greyhounds began practices for the fall football season Monday morning.

The Clayton Greyhounds took to the practice field for the first time on Monday to prepare for the 2011 campaign. In a summer defined by extreme heat, the Greyhounds encountered mild weather, with a temperature in the 70s and the sun behind the clouds. “This is what we’d hoped for,” coach Scott Weissman said, smiling. Fifty players hit the practice field on the first day. The Greyhounds are scheduled to practice four hours a day this week. Practices include both drills and weightlifting. Weissman said he expected more players to join later in the week, as some were out of town. Clayton experienced some success last year, finishing the season with an 8-4 record. Weissman said he was impressed with the off-season work ethic of his players. …

Clayton High Releases 2011 Football Schedule

The Greyhounds will open their season Aug. 27 at Lutheran North.

The Clayton High School athletics department recently marked the official start of its 2011-12 sporting year by releasing its 2011 varsity, junior varsity and freshmen football schedules. The first day of fall practice for the Greyhounds is set for Monday, which also will mark the official beginning of a new era for Clayton football. New Greyhounds head coach Scott Weissman will be taking over the program after succeeding popular former head coach Sam Horrell, who was let go from that role in May on suspicion of violating Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) policy regarding workouts for middle school athletes. Weissman, who has coached different sports at various schools around the area, won a state title as the head…
