Meanwhile, the Clayton High School boys team is looking to regroup after experiencing a tough schedule during the first half of the season.
The only basketball win at Clayton High School over the recent holiday break belonged to the girls team, which won a consolation semifinal game Dec. 27 at the MICDS Tournament over Oakville. That win also marked probably the Greyhounds girls’ best victory of the season: The team came from behind several times to defeat Oakville 39-36 in double overtime. Lacei Sams, a junior, scored a team-high 10 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds during a tremendous defensive battle between the Greyhounds and Tigers. Teammate Carmen Planells had eight points and seven rebounds. Clayton lifted its overall record to 2-4. But the Greyhounds couldn’t manage the same luck the next night. They let their lead get away in a 50-45 consolation championship …

Senior Clayton Buchanan dropped 33 points to lead the Greyhounds to a 66-61 win over Eureka High School.
KIRKWOOD — After dropping two tough ballgames to start the new boys basketball season, the Clayton Greyhounds picked up their first win of the season Tuesday night with a 66-61 triumph over Eureka High School. It happened on Day 2 of the 44th annual Jerry Boeckman Memorial Invitational Tournament at Vianney High School. The Greyhounds led 36-26 at halftime and pushed their edge to 13 points at one point. They held off a rally by the Wildcats for a five-point win. “We’re a young team, still learning on the fly,” Clayton head coach Ryan Luhning said. “We were up by 10 with four minutes to go, so I think we’ve got to be a little better at closing games out. It was kind of our mantra to do whatever it takes to get a win, and that’s what we did…

The Greyhounds were conference and district champions last season, when they went 22-7. Now, the boys hope to defend those crowns when a new campaign begins with a trip to Rolla on Nov. 28.
For the Clayton High School boys varsity basketball team, last season was a magic carpet ride. It ended with a 22-7 record for the Greyhounds, a set of conference and district championship titles won on their home floor, and two players ending the year with all-state honors from the statewide coaches association. But that was last year, and stars Christian Thomas (Loyola University Chicago) and Ahmad Smith (Webster University) are now doing their thing in the college ranks. That means this season, new Greyhound talents will have to emerge. “Those two guys averaged nearly 45 points a game,” Clayton head basketball coach Ryan Luhning said. “So sometimes we could win games just with our offense. But I told the guys this year, we don’t have …

In other local sports news, the Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball team went 2-1 last week.
After a dismal performance earlier this month at the season-opening Hancock Tournament, the Maplewood Richmond Heights girls volleyball team has found its footing the last couple of weeks by winning four of its last five contests. Last week, MRH won two of three matches, taking a two-sets-to-one loss at Bayless on Tuesday but bouncing back with a pair of straight set wins over Jennings and Hancock on Wednesday and Thursday. Senior Julie Schenberg was a key figure for MRH in all three matchups, totaling 43 assists as the Blue Devils’ primary setter. Starting setter Brittney Poole missed most of the week because of an injury. MRH will play a pair of road games this week with a visit to Valley Park on Monday and a match at Crossroads on …
