The Maplewood Richmond Heights Blue Devils baseball team struck first.
The Maplewood-Richmond Heights baseball team missed out on a district championship Saturday, falling 3-4 to Brentwood in the finals of the Class 2 District 5 Tournament. In the bottom of the eighth, after Brentwood junior Kevin Smith crushed a triple to deep right field, the Blue Devils (8-14, 3-6) opted to intentionally walk senior Ryan Marshall and freshman Dylan McGehee. That brought junior Tyler Jones to the plate with only one out. Jones tapped a swinging bunt just a few feet in front of home plate toward MRH pitcher Kevin Sapp, who tossed the ball to catcher Samuel Martin. Smith slid into home and was called safe as Martin couldn't hang on to the ball. "All I told Tyler was to put a bat on the baseball," Brentwood (16-6, 7-2) coach …

The Maplewood Richmond Heights Blue Devils defeated Barat Academy on Wednesday, 9-8.
Kevin Sapp showed Maplewood Richmond Heights fans why he's been the team's go-to pitcher this year on Wednesday night at Brentwood Park. Holding a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, with runners on third and second and two outs, the senior pitcher fired a strike past Barat Academy junior Sam Byrne to seal the Blue Devils' 9-8 second-round Class 2 district win. They'll play for the district championship Thursday night. Sapp's standout performance included 10 strikeouts, plus three hits and three runs batted in as a batter. "I just had winning on my mind the whole time," Sapp said. "I gave my team the opportunity to compete for a district championship tomorrow." Like many other MRH games this season, the victory didn't come …

The kids learn to work in teams to use high-tech gadgetry in pursuit of achieving a complex goal in a field that is rapidly gaining traction in the global economy.
"The box is locked, the lights are on, it’s robot fighting time … in St. Louis!" OK, the gladiatorial gizmos coming to our city won’t sport massive circular saws and seek to destroy one another with the finest death gadgetry that can be activated by remote control, but they can put the nail in the coffin by successfully deploying a poll-climbing mini-bot. Wednesday marked the start of the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Championship, the most important day of the year for kid roboticists from all over the world. And what better place to hold this epic event than in the building that housed the Greatest Show on Turf, the Edward Jones Dome? Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. You can find…

Ten players scored as MRH routed Carnahan, 79-38, on Wednesday. The Blue Devils play Cardinal Ritter on Friday for the district championship.
It’s no secret what drives and fuels the Maplewood Richmond Heights boys basketball team: Everything starts and ends on the defensive side of the ball. The second-seeded Blue Devils smothered Carnahan from the opening tip-off until the final buzzer sounded, forcing 27 turnovers, as MRH rolled to a 79-38 victory in the Class 3, District 5 semifinals Wednesday night. Next up for MRH (16-11) is top-seeded Cardinal Ritter (21-5), which cruised past Metro St. Louis by a similar margin of 79-37 following the Blue Devils’ win. “That’s part of our offense,” MRH head coach Corey Frazier said of his ball-hawking, full-court pressure. “I mean, we’re clicking a little bit. We’re getting better every game. “I want to make sure the kids get their rest …

Maplewood Richmond Heights ended Thursday tied for eighth place in Class 1 competition, while Clayton wrapped up the day tied for 37th in Class 2.
COLUMBIA — Wrestling fans from across the state speckled the typically gold-filled seats of Mizzou Arena all day Thursday for the 81st Missouri State Wrestling Championships. It took eight simultaneous matches at a time, but all four different classes completed their first round matches and also their consolation rounds, also known as wrestlebacks. “There are a lot of logistics that go into it,” said Jason West, communications director for the Missouri State High School Activities Association. “We have over 1,600 matches over the next three days. There are four classes. There’s a lot of planning.” Midway through the first day of competition, West said he thought everything was running smoothly. “The good thing is that this particular …

It's the first time the Greyhounds have sent wrestlers to the Columbia event in two years.
Clayton Greyhounds wrestlers Caleb Grady and Ed Davis broke new ground this season. Grady, a junior, and Davis, a sophomore, were the first wrestlers from Clayton to qualify for the state tournament in two years. In addition, this year marks the first time since 1999 that the Greyhounds have sent more than one competitor to state. “This is a big boost for us, and getting two people through was a big plus,” Clayton wrestling coach Doug Verby said. The top four wrestlers in each district tournament in the state of Missouri qualify for the state tournament in Columbia, MO. Davis placed third in the 112-pound weight class Saturday in the Class 2 District 2 Tournament at John Burroughs High School, while Grady placed fourth at 125. Davis was …
