The Blue Devils proved they could last a whole game on defense, shutting down the Rebels in the second half.
At 2-2, and in front of hundreds of Maplewood Richmond Heights alumni at the game for homecoming, the Blue Devils were looking for a win any way they could. They found it against Park Hills Central, winning 31-6, scoring with passing, rushing and a 39-yard field goal. The win puts MRH at 3-2 and leaves the Park Hills Central Rebels at the opposite: 2-3. “Defense finished,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. He was referring to last week’s game against Ste. Genevieve when MRH was up 19-0 at the half but lost 25-26. (A photo gallery from the game is available on our Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) The Devils worked extra hard on conditioning during the week and it paid off. “Nobody cramped up,” he said. “When you’re …

The Devils faced Park Hills Central, a team with an identical 2-2 record, and came out on top.
Park Hills Central may have come to Maplewood Richmond Heights to spoil the Blue Devil homecoming game, but the Rebels didn’t come close. MRH coach Brandon Gregory had an extra emphasis on conditioning the week before the game, and it paid off. The Blue Devils were up 14-6 at the half and finished strong right up to their final field goal with 1:39 left in the game, winning 31-6. (Blue Devils fans — more photos are available on our MRH Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) MRH held the Rebels on the first possession, stopping them after 14 plays. The MRH defense closed up the middle, which has been the Rebel’s bread and butter. On the first Blue Devils' possession, a 30-yard pass play from junior quarterback Kahlid …

The Blue Devils shut out Ste. Genevieve in the first half, only to lose at the end, 26-25.
The Dragons from Ste. Genevieve must have heard one heck of a halftime speech in their home game against Maplewood Richmond Heights. Other than a last-minute MRH score in the fourth quarter, the Dragons dominated the Blue Devils in the second half, winning 26-25 in a conference matchup. “We didn’t finish and they capitalized,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. “We still gave ourselves a chance and didn’t finish there at the end.” The entire first half felt like the perfect fall football night on the MRH side of the field. But the night ended much like its week one loss to MICDS. (Check out complete photos from the game on our new Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) Ste. Genevieve won the toss and chose to receive, but…

Subs and "lackadaisical" play let the Trojans keep the game close in the first half.
POTOSI — Maplewood Richmond Heights football turned its .500 season into a winning season, on the first road game of the year in Potosi. The Blue Devils (2-1) finally beat the Trojans 28-14, after being tied at six at the half. The conference win gives MRH a 2-1 record overall, but the slow start and sub-par defense had coach Brandon Gregory fuming at the end. “We came out lackadaisical, taking guys for granted, taking forever to get going,” Gregory said. “Instead of coming out playing our game, we let people think that they have a chance, and these are the results we’re going to get.” (Want more photos? Freshman running back Elijah Keely leads the Blue Devils to a 28-14 victory.
POTOSI — Freshman Elijah Keely was back on the field for Maplewood Richmond Heights, and again was the leading Blue Devils rusher. Coach Brandon Gregory said Keely was the only Blue Devil to step up in what he called an “ugly” road win over the Potosi Trojans. MRH had a slow start for the second time in three games, but managed a 28-14 win over the conference foe. “Until we come out slinging first, we’re going to have to fight the whole four quarters,” Gregory said. “We’re just going to have to keep digging ourselves out of a hole.” (See more photos from the game on our MRH Blue Devils Facebook page) MRH kicked off to start the game, then held the Trojans in four downs, but couldn’t get going in the rest of first quarter. A six-play …

Blue Devils run score to 45-0 in the first half, then the junior varsity offense adds 10 more in the second.
A dominant Maplewood Richmond Heights performance on Friday night prevented the Brentwood Eagles from scoring a single point. The Blue Devils (1-1) tallied 55 points while holding Brentwood (0-2) to 0 in a shutout game at MRH High School. “Our guys came out and flew around like we wanted them to,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. “For the most part they did what (defensive coach) Coach Kime asked them to do and everything went the right way.” ("Like" our brand new MRH Blue Devils Facebook page to view photo galleries from the game — www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) MRH junior Wes Williams, who finished up last year as a quarterback, stepped in for freshman runningback Elijah Keely and went 49 yards in five carries for his first three …

Maplewood-Richmond Heights won by a big margin, setting two school records despite soggy conditions.
Maplewood Richmond Heights (MRH) athletes persevered through constant chill and rain Saturday at the Class 1 and 2 sectional track meet at Principia High School. MRH and another local team held their positions from the previous district meet and are headed to state. The MRH boys won the sectional meet with 146 points, and the next closest team was Herculaneum with 86. The Principia boys garnered 77 for fourth place. Principia coach Jamie Bolinger said nearly everyone on the boys team who qualified for sectionals at the district meet advanced to state. MRH will six girls and 10 boys to the state meet from Saturday's sectionals. Sending boys is nothing new for MRH, but six girls going is big. Coach Brandon Gregory said that in the last two …

A core of seniors with plenty of talent and experience plans to follow coach Brandon Gregory back to Columbia.
Maplewood Richmond Heights High School head track coach Brandon Gregory is hopeful that if his team stays injury-free, it can win the Class 2 state championship for the third consecutive year. Gregory graduated only two seniors after last season, and the core members of his team have experience in the state meet from both their sophomore and junior years. He said the kids love being champions, so track has become the most popular spring sport at MRH. Gregory said these numbers will help at the state championship meet in May. “With the amount of kids we got out, it helps relieve the amount of stuff they have to do. So instead of doing four events, they might only have to do two.” The Blue Devils broke four relay records at the 2010 state …

At the Maplewood Richmond Heights football banquet, every contributor to the team's success is applauded.
The Maplewood Richmond Heights 2010 football family got together one last time on Tuesday night. Players, coaches, families and friends gathered for a team banquet in the Sunnen complex in Maplewood to celebrate a successful Blue Devils season. The Blue Devils went 14-1 on their way to the Missouri Class 2 state championship game, where they lost to Penney. The team fell short of its final goal of winning the state championship, but parents were proud of the team's accomplishments this year. "It's my son's first year playing with them, and I think they had a great year," said Adrienne Cooper, mother of senior Cortez Cooper. "I thank little Wes, number ten, for stepping up, and I wish we could have won, it but it was a blessing to be at …
