Gateway to China: Local Hub Talk Coincides with Travel from St. Louis to Chengdu

There has been a good deal of talk about China in metro St. Louis lately. Our lawmakers, business groups, and corporate leaders hope to make the region a hub for trade with China. That hope has a name: Aerotropolis. Right about now there is a bit of turbulence around the idea, though, as reported by the Missouri Watchdog here on Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch. Maryland Heights Patch and Hazelwood Patch also reported on the Aerotropolis, which would involve providing tax credits for developers to build cargo warehouses and related infrastructure in the communities near Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Turbulence Possible As China Hub Discussion Gets Underway

While many Missouri leaders lined up in St. Louis this week to voice their support for the proposal, groups such as the Show-Me Institute argue that the government should avoid involvement in the issue.

Legislative Leaders Reach Economic Development Compromise

The announcement came after the chairman of a commission trying to steer Chinese cargo to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport briefed members of the St. Louis County Council on Tuesday in Clayton.

A proposed Missouri economic development package announced Wednesday includes incentives to create a China hub at the St. Louis airport. At a news conference at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, state legislators, business officials and local politicians extolled a plan that would include $360 million worth of tax credits to foster creation of a China hub for the region. An effort to send such a measure to Gov. Jay Nixon failed earlier this year when lawmakers couldn’t agree on a final piece of legislation.
