High school students and their mentors have been putting in long hours in preparation for the play, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Clayton High School theater director Kelley Ryan hopes the cast and crew of the upcoming production of Oklahoma will communicate the variety of emotions embedded in the well-known musical. “It’s one of those classic plays, and it’s not as sweet as a lot of people think,” Ryan said. “There’s a lot of drama and romance in it. It’s a really good story with really great characters as well as a lot of danger.” Ryan also said she wants “the ruggedness of the people and time period to come out.” Oklahoma, penned by composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein, tells the story of cowboy Curley McLain and his romantic endeavors with farm girl Laurey Williams.
