Moms Talk Q&A

What are Best Practices for Developing Elementary Students' After-School Routines?

And to what degree do those routines change from day to day?

Routines are helpful for several reasons. They provide a sense of order in an otherwise chaotic world, help us plan our days and give us the opportunity to minimize surprises. But they can also be difficult to establish, as noted at HealthyChildren.org, a website powered by the American Academy of Pediatrics. "One of a family's greatest challenges is to establish comfortable, effective routines, which should achieve a happy compromise between the disorder and confusion that can occur without them," the website states, "and the rigidity and boredom that can come with too much structure and regimentation, where children are given no choice and little flexibility." My number one rule: make after school activities convenient. That includes drive time and time of day. Living in a car is not what I call fun and eating dinner as a family is very important, so I schedule activities accordingly. I also make sure to have different activities throughout the year. Tornado Warning Canceled for Clayton, Richmond Heights

A tornado watch was set to remain in effect until 3 p.m.

A tornado warning has been canceled Dec. 31 for Clayton and Richmond Heights, the National Weather Service stated on its Web site. A tornado watch was expected to remain in effect until 3 p.m. The Weather Service had reported that rain-wrapped tornadoes and straight-line winds would be possible as part of a storm system moving through the region. A small group of people was monitoring the weather situation at the St. Louis County Office of Emergency Management, said county spokesman Mac Scott. In the event that the storm causes damage, other workers would be deployed to help out and the county would alert the public to the information. A representative with the Weather Service could not immediately be reached for comment. A call to its St…

Police: No Evidence Students' Reports of Suspicious Activity Connected

The comments come after a Maplewood Richmond Heights High School student reported being asked for money and chased Dec. 15.

There is no evidence that two recent reports of Maplewood Richmond Heights students being approached by strangers are connected, a law enforcement official said Dec. 17. Descriptions of the men in the reports do not match, and no one was touched or injured in either case, said Sgt. Matt Nighbor of the Maplewood Police Department. But the police are willing to follow up on reports. "Anything suspicious, report it to us," Nighbor said. The resource officer at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School will follow up on each student report to determine whether any connections can be drawn among them. A high school student reported Dec. 15 that he was asked for money, and later chased by, an unknown man while on his way home from school. In …
