The Maplewood Richmond Heights Blue Devils were down by 17 points but battled back and barely fell short of the win.
Strong efforts from Antonia Lee and Cassandra Goodson weren't enough for Maplewood Richmond Heights girls basketball team on Tuesday night. The young Blue Devils fell to a more experienced St. Elizabeth Academy team in the first round of the Class 3, District 5 tournament, 65-58. MRH (6-18) was down by as much 17 points in the first half, but a second-half resurgence, led by Lee, sparked a comeback to bring the game within two points late in the fourth quarter. The late rally wasn't enough to overcome a persistent and balanced St. Elizabeth (16-10) offense that featured four double-digit scorers, led by senior Jalissa Watt's 18 points. Lee's 28 points and six three-pointers led the MRH offense. The junior point guard played every minute of…

Maplewood Richmond Heights beats Lift For Life Academy on Monday in the first round of the Class 3, District 5 Tournament, 84-30.
Senior Tony King fueled the Maplewood Richmond Heights boys basketball team's offensive charge, but it was the Blue Devils' stingy defense that controlled the game Monday night. A young Lift For Life Academy team—comprised only of freshmen and sophomores—continually turned the ball over against MRH's full-court press. The frustration was obvious, and the amount of traveling calls on the youthful Hawks in the first half was astounding. "We executed defensively," coach Corey Frazier said. "The kids are playing for something right now." King led the team with 29 points, scoring more in the first half than the entire Life For Life team (23 to 22). Frazier said King sets the tone for the team. "If he's going to be aggressive, then we're going …

The match took place on Jan. 26 at Clayton High School.
The Clayton Greyhounds wrestling team went two for three in its Jan. 26 quad meet against Brentwood High School, St. Mary’s and Barat Academy at Clayton High School. The Greyhounds defeated Barat 64-6 and St. Mary’s 42-13, but suffered a 45-22 loss to Brentwood. “There were a few guys that I expected better matches out of, but our younger guys stepped up and wrestled well the entire time, kids like Nathaniel Remshard and M.J. Milbourn,” Clayton coach Doug Verby said. “M.J. just made it back. He’s coming back off of a serious football injury. He’s only wrestled for two weeks. Colin Shenberger came up with a big pin over a St. Mary’s kid.” Shenberger, who wrestles in the 140-pound weight class, defeated St. Mary’s Austin Ezell, and …

The Clayton boys basketball team will face Fort Zumwalt East at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in the first round of the tournament.
The Clayton Greyhounds boys basketball team has compiled an impressive record in the first five weeks of the 2010-11 campaign. Clayton had an 11-2 record as of last week. The Greyhounds seem to be destined to improve upon last season, when they finished 17-8. “It’s early, but the guys have played well,” Greyhounds coach Ryan Luhning said. “We’re going to get a real tough stretch with the conference schedule starting and the (Christian Brothers College High School's DC Wilcutt) Tournament starting. It’s always a real good tournament. We’re in a stretch where we’ll play a bunch of good teams, and I hope we’ll continue to play like we’ve been playing, and I hope our record continues to improve. We just hope we keep getting better and that we’…

Clayton coach Ryan Luhning said defensive stops were key to the win.
Despite a slow start, the Clayton Greyhounds boys basketball team managed a win against the St. Louis University High Junior Billikens to take third place in the MICDS Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament on Dec. 30. The Greyhounds (11-2) defeated the Junior Billikens, 69-61. "Our goal was to win the tournament, and we didn't reach that goal," Clayton coach Ryan Luhning said. "We're disappointed in that, but we'll take the win. We didn't play really well, their kids fought hard and we just had a little more in the tank in the second half. " Clayton's defense created scoring opportunities in the last half of the game. SLUH committed seven turnovers in the second half. The Greyhounds led 33-26 at halftime and 51-44 at the end of …

As a result, the Clayton boys basketball team will play for third place Dec. 30 in the MICDS Holiday Tournament
Two free throws from Clyde C. Miller Career Academy's Dorian Dean with just a second left on the clock sealed the Clayton Greyhounds' fate Dec. 29 in the MICDS Holiday Tournament. The Miller Academy Phoenixes' 73-70 win sends them to the championship game of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 30. Clayton will play for third place at 6 p.m. Dean's free throws gave Miller a 72-70 lead. Jared Fulks' free throw with less than a second on the clock made the score 73-70. Miller coach Dale Turner said the Dean "did an excellent job." The senior guard missed two free throws at the 5:34 mark in the fourth quarter. Turner had a talk with Dean in the time out just seconds before the key free throw shots. "I told him not to worry about those two …
