Kumon Math and Reading Center in Clayton is a franchise of an international program that began in Japan. The…More after-school facility provides instruction in math and reading for people ages 3 to high-school age.
The goal is to make students independent learners using a linear format. Instead of presenting a series of different concepts, students are given one concept at a time to master. The Kumon philosophy is that mastery in the building blocks of a subject is critical to success. For example, students might master the concept of addition before moving onto division and, later, calculus.
Kumon views its programming as beneficial to both public and private students. It is available for those who are doing well and want to learn beyond their specified grade level, and also for those who might be struggling with a topic. Students are normally expected to reach a mastery level that is at least six months to a year ahead of their given grade level. Financial aid is available to existing Kumon students whose families are experiencing hardship on a case-by-case basis.
