A funeral Mass for Msgr. Jerome Wilkerson will be celebrated Friday, April 5, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
A priest who served the University City and Washington University communities for many years has died. Msgr. Jerome Wilkerson was 88. He died March 28, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wilkerson became the founding director in 1963 of the Newman Center at the Washington University medical campus. He also served as a pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in the 1980s. The St. Louis Review's obituary reported that Wilkerson was appointed pastor of Lourdes in 1982. He was named pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Clayton in 1994. He retired in 1999. Stith was Clayton's mayor from 1983-1987.
Dick Stith, a former Clayton mayor, died last week at the age of 93. Stith died Feb. 10, 2013. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, his family told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Stith ran eight times, six times for alderman and twice for mayor. He faced opposition only once, winning his first race for alderman against an incumbent, according to the Post. Visitation for Suzanne Saueressig is today at Ambruster-Donnelly.
The first female veterinarian for the Humane Society of Missouri, a Richmond Heights resident died last week. Dr. Suzanne Saueressig Riegel died Feb. 8, 2013, at St. Mary’s Health Center. Dr. Saueressig, as she was known professionally, started working at the Humane Society in 1955, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She was born in Nuremberg, became a nurse during World War II and was drafted into the German army. American forces held her after the war as a prisoner of war. Once released, she returned to school to train as a veterinarian. The Humane Society of Missouri told the Post she was the first practicing female veterinarian in Missouri.
