Top 10 Lists Feature Clayton's Softball and Soccer Teams

Fall sports are in full swing in the Clayton and Maplewood Richmond Heights school districts.

This year's fall sports season is in full swing, and several teams from the and school districts are off to fantastic starts.

One of the hottest teams to start the new sports year is the girls softball team, which began its season Aug. 23 and has gone 7-2 after three weeks of play.

Last week, the Greyhounds, who were ranked ninth in the St. Louis area in last week’s top 10 softball poll, to claim the Suburban East Conference Tournament championship in a 10-1 win at .

Senior catcher Taylor Gold had two hits and two RBIs, including her second home run of the season in the victory over the Rams, while freshman pitcher Raime Cohen earned her sixth win of the year by pitching a complete game and striking out 17 Ladue batters.

For the season, Gold leads the Greyhounds in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.643), homers (two), and RBIs (15). Cohen lead the team in hits (17) and stolen bases (eight).

This week, Clayton will play four games on four consecutive days, beginning with a home game Monday against .

On Tuesday, the Greyhounds will play their lone road game of the week, when they’ll travel to North County to take on Suburban East rival Normandy.

Wednesday will bring the ‘Hounds back home for a matchup against . They will close out the week Thursday with a home rematch against .

All four of those contests are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. If the Greyhounds can get through the week without a loss, they could rise in the top 10 rankings.

Meanwhile, the Clayton boys soccer team landed at the No. 9 spot in last week’s top 10 poll.

The Greyhounds celebrated their status among the area’s elite with an impressive 2-1 win over Ritenour last Tuesday at the Ritenour Soccer Center.

Senior Charlie Harned scored the game-winning goal that day, and junior teammate Jack Klamer got the win in goal as the Greyhounds held off the Huskies in a spirited second half.

But on the following day, Clayton didn’t play nearly as well: The team suffered a 5-1 loss to No. 6-ranked Trinity Catholic.

This week, the Greyhounds have two games on the slate. They have a Tuesday road matchup scheduled against St. Francis Borgia and a Thursday home date set against rival Ladue.

Tuesday’s match is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m., while Thursday’s critical Suburban East contest will start at 5:30 p.m.

The Clayton girls volleyball team fell to 2-4 on the season, after suffering straight set and Affton last week.  

This week, the Greyhounds have road matches scheduled against St. Elizabeth’s, Brentwood and Ladue on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Their next home match is slated for Sept. 19 against Lutheran North.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights girls volleyball team is also 2-4 heading into the third week of the season.  

Senior setter Brittney Poole is off to a good start. She leads the Blue Devils with 39 assists and 15 service aces.

MRH’s top hitters thus far have been sophomore Mariah Russell, who leads the team with 22 kills, and senior Amber Sinclair, who’s second on the team with 19 kills.

This week, the Devils have three matches scheduled. On Tuesday, they’ll host Valley Park; on Wednesday, they’ll play at Normandy; and on Friday, they’ll be back home against Brentwood.

All three matches are set to begin at 5 p.m.

The MRH boys soccer team got its first win of the season last Saturday with an 8-2 defeat of Canton (MO).

Senior John Barron had a hat trick that day, scoring three goals and adding an assist, while fellow senior Sam Martin scored twice himself. It was easily the Devils' best performance of the season.

MRH is now 1-4 and will look to improve on that mark with three games on the schedule this week.

On Tuesday, MRH will play Valley Park at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Center in Fenton.

On Thursday, the Devils will play Metro at Gateway Middle School in St. Louis before finishing off their week with a home matchup against rival Brentwood.
