MRH Suffers Second-Half Collapse in Loss at Ste. Genevieve

The second half is all Ste. Genevieve, and the Blue Devils fail to tie the game on a late extra point.

STE. GENEVIEVE—An absolutely stunning swing in momentum gave the Ste. Genevieve Dragons a 26-25 win over Maplewood Richmond Heights on Friday night.

In the first half, the Blue Devils were able to capitalize on two Ste. Genevieve fumbles and two interceptions. Freshman Elijah Keely had a 7-yard touchdown run, and three possessions later sophomore Karon Thomas added a 35-yard TD run. Later, a 35-yard pass play to senior Kashon Hagens gave the Blue Devils an 18-0 lead at the half.

MRH received the ball to start the second half, but ran out of steam on the Dragons’ 26-yard line. The Dragons took over, and began to rally. Senior quarterback Brendan Weiler, who went 10-for-16 in the game, combined with senior running back Jacob Billings as the key players in the comeback. They led Ste. Genevieve to four second-half touchdowns, surpassing the Devils, 26-19, with 2:42 to go.

MRH then took the ball from the 50-yard line and scored on a keeper by junior quarterback Kahlid Hagens to draw within 26-25. MRH went for the extra point to tie but John Barron’s kick was blocked.

The loss leaves MRH at 2-2 and Ste. Genevieve improves to 3-1.
