Maplewood Richmond Heights Boys Fall to Chaminade, 70-50

MRH enjoys a strong start against Chaminade, but sees its 13-point first-half lead erased as Bradley Beal takes over the game in the second half.

With a stonewall defense that held the Maplewood Richmond Heights boys basketball team scoreless for almost nine minutes stretching through the second and third periods, top-ranked Chaminade was able to overcome a 30-17 first-half deficit to roll past the Blue Devils, 70-50, on Saturday night.

Halfway through the third period, some players started getting into arguments. MRH coach Corey Frazier ran on the court and got ejected from the game.

“Frazier ran out there,” MRH assistant coach John Redden said, “and the referee had been on us the whole game. He didn't say anything bad, he was just trying to calm everybody down, but it was just a bad call on us.”

“Corey Frazier’s team always plays hard,” Chaminade coach Kelvin Lee said. “We got a little ugly there for a while, but that’s Corey. I got to defend my house, and my players responded for me, so it was all good.”

The home game was the fifth annual McBride Night at Chaminade, so the Red Devils wore the green jerseys of McBride High School, a downtown St. Louis school no longer in existence. The Red Devils (21-0) defended their house and are 7-0 in the MCC conference. The loss bumped MRH to 8-9 overall.

The Blue Devils came out strong in the first quarter, jumping to a six-point lead behind the shooting of senior guard Tony King, who finished with a team-high 22 points. Eventually, Chaminade senior guard Bradley Beal took over the game with an assortment of second-half dunks, drives, dishes and free throws. Beal finished with 34 points, including 23 in the second half.

MRH opened the second quarter with five 3s in a row from King and junior guard Jake Hensel, at which point Lee called a timeout.

“I told my seniors, 'You guys are seniors, you got to show some composure now,'" Lee said. "And they did that … and we scored and got back in the game.”

“We came out fighting,” Redden said, “then we got a couple of calls on a couple of plays, then we just went downhill from there.”

Lee said: “Our guys play hard. Christian Suntrup (senior guard), Giovanni Ferrara (senior guard), you got to give those guys credit. They’re the guys that don’t get any pub. Bradley gets his pub, but those guys are our role players, so those guys are doing a great job of playing.”

MRH plays at Hancock (5-10) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
