Greyhounds Host Football Scrimmage in Clayton

Four St. Louis-area football coaches took their teams out for a test drive Friday at Gay Field in Clayton.

The hosted the Burroughs Bombers, Duchesne Pioneers and DuBourg Cavaliers. For 90 minutes, teams got to test their new plays under a broiling sun. There wasn't any fall snap in the 92-degree heat.

Referees got a chance to work together, coaches found out more about their teams, players got to hit people other than their own teammates and fans had a reason to come out on a hot night.

is looking for all kinds of possibilities with Clayton.

"The only sure thing I know is that Saturday," he said. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lutheran North.

Weissman served as an assistant coach at Clayton last year, so he knows the returning personnel well.

"We'll know more when we look at the films," said Burroughs first year coach Gus Frerotte, a former NFL quarterback. His goal: Find a quarterback to succeed Sam Van Doren, who threw for some 3,200 yards last year before graduating.

Peter Schnuck, Davey Holmes and Jack Wood are in a three-way battle for the position. The only sure thing is Ezekiel Elliott, a junior track star who will lug the leather this season.
