Greyhound Spring Teams Defined By Success Stories, Hope For the Future

Clayton's track, soccer and baseball teams can look ahead for even brighter 2012 seasons.

Clayton Greyhounds sports teams fought their way through another spring sports season--one defined by more than one success story.

The Clayton Greyhounds boys and girls track and field teams each had relay teams that made the cut for the all-state track team.

The boy’s 4 x 100-meter relay team, comprised of Tyler Walker, Kameron Stewart, Frank May and Jeremiah Camp made the state finals. So did the girls 4 x 200-meter relay team, comprised of Kayla Brown, Traci Walker, Leah Johnson and Laci Sams.

Both relay teams earned all-state honors with eighth place finishes at the state track and field tournament in Jefferson City. The top eight placers in each event in the state tournament are named all-state.

The Greyhounds girls soccer team finished the year with an 11-7 record and also won the Suburban East Conference. Clayton blazed a track record of success in the last decade, as it turned in eight winning seasons in the last 10 years.

The Greyhounds should have a lot to look forward to next year, as its top offensive weapon, forward Meg Sutter, is just a sophomore. Sutter netted 14 goals and 13 assists. Junior midfielder Karley Woods and sophomore midfielder Christina DiFelice each added seven goals. Junior forward Clair Laufketter finished the 2011 campaign with four goals.

Clayton’s baseball team failed to produce a winning season, as the Greyhounds finished with a 10-16 record, but Clayton played well in the SEC with a 3-1 record in the league and a second place finish.

While the Greyhounds lose nine seniors to graduation, they certainly have a quality talent pool to draw on next year. Junior Noah Eby pitched a no hitter against Normandy on April 13. He finished the season with a 3-3 record, a 3.47 ERA, and was voted onto the all-SEC baseball team.

The Greyhounds also have a few key offensive weapons returning next year. Freshman Auggie Mense and sophomore utility player Chris Daughtery each finished the season with impressive batting averages, as Mense hit .378 and Daughtery hit .400. Daughtery and Mense also made the all-conference team.

Although the story of the 2012 Clayton spring sports season won’t be written until a little under a year from now, fans have to like the school’s chances of creating great memories.
