Clayton Softball Team Has Winless Week

In other local sports news, the Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball team went 2-1 last week.

After a dismal performance earlier this month at the season-opening Hancock Tournament, the girls volleyball team has found its footing the last couple of weeks by winning four of its last five contests.

Last week, MRH won two of three matches, taking a two-sets-to-one loss at Bayless on Tuesday but bouncing back with a pair of straight set wins over Jennings and Hancock on Wednesday and Thursday.

Senior Julie Schenberg was a key figure for MRH in all three matchups, totaling 43 assists as the Blue Devils’ primary setter. Starting setter Brittney Poole missed most of the week because of an injury.

The Maplewood boys soccer team didn’t fare quite as well last week, going 1-2-1 in four games as part of the Hillsboro (MO) Tournament.

MRH lost 7-2 and 6-4 to Perryville and Fredericktown on Monday and Thursday, and it tied with Festus 2-2 on Wednesday.

The one victory came Saturday morning, when the Blue Devils walloped Bonne Terre (MO) North County, 9-3.

At the time of this writing, MRH’s season stats hadn’t been updated. But seniors John Barron and Sam Martin remain the Blue Devils’ leading scorers, with 14 goals and 10 goals this season, respectively.

The Clayton girls softball team suffered its first winless week of the season after losing 8-1 to Affton on Tuesday and 11-1 to Rosati-Kain on Wednesday.

Freshman standout pitcher Raime Cohen got roughed up in both outings last week but still remains one of the area’s best hurlers this season. She has an 8-4 record and a 2.94 ERA.

Cohen, a key figure in Clayton’s 10-4 start this season, is also the Greyhounds’ leading hitter. She has a .583 batting average, three home runs and 16 RBIs.

Senior catcher Taylor Gold (.423 ba, 2 HR, 13 RBI) and senior first baseman Michaela Idelberg (.313 ba, 2 HR, 13 RBI) are also having fine seasons for the Greyhounds.

It’s been a tough season for the Clayton girls volleyball team this year.

The Greyhounds have lost 11 straight matches but hope to end that slide this week with a 5:15 p.m. Tuesday match at John Burroughs.

The Clayton boys soccer team snapped its three-game losing streak with an exciting 3-1 win over Bishop DuBourg on Friday at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton.

The Greyhounds had been held to just three goals in their previous five matches before Friday. But led by a goal and an assist by Suburban East Conference-leading scorer Charlie Harned, Clayton netted three scores against DuBourg.

The Greyhounds have two games scheduled for Gay Field this week.

On Monday, they’ll host Westminster Christian at 5:30 p.m. Then on Tuesday, Clayton will be back at it with a matchup against University City at 4:15 p.m.
