Clayton Softball and Soccer Teams Take Three Straight Wins

Here's a roundup of sports highlights from Clayton and Maplewood Richmond Heights high schools last week.

The big news in St. Louis high school sports this week is the beginning of the girls softball district playoffs. For most teams, the playoffs will get underway Wednesday afternoon with games all over the state.

The , one of the surprise teams of the season with a 14-4 record this fall, will play their regular season finale at home Monday against Valley Park and will begin district play with a home game against Soldan on Wednesday.

Last week, Clayton won three straight by a combined scored of 39-4 over McCluer, McCluer South-Berkeley and .

Freshman standout Raime Cohen got two of those wins on the mound for the Greyhounds. She had eight hits and six RBIs at the plate in the three wins.

Other Clayton standouts at the plate last week include senior catcher Taylor Gold, senior third baseman Lauren Hill and sophomore outfielder Stephanie Langendoerfer. Each had multiple-hit, multiple-RBI games.

Should Clayton get past Soldan in the first-round game Wednesday, it would face Kennedy in the district semifinals Thursday. The winner of that game would advance to the district championship game Friday.

The Clayton boys soccer team also has won three straight games thanks to back-to-back home wins over Westminster Christian and University City last week.

Senior Charlie Harned had three goals and an assist in the win over Westminster, and he scored the game-winner in the victory over University City.

For the season, he leads the Suburban East Conference in scoring with 10 goals and five assists. Teammate Adam Monterusso had a hand in all three goals in the University City game, scoring one and assisting on the other two.

The Clayton girls tennis team capped off another brilliant regular season with a pair of team victories last week. That gave the Greyhounds a 10-1 record so far this season.

The Greyhounds got word late last week that they have been named the No. 1 seed in the tennis district playoffs, earning the team a first-round bye.

Clayton is set to face the winner of Monday’s -University City match on Tuesday at .

The winner of that match will advance to the district championship and face either Burroughs or MICDS on Wednesday for the title.

The Clayton girls volleyball team fell to 3-12-3 this season with a two sets to none loss to John Burroughs last Tuesday.

This week, the Greyhounds have three matches scheduled, including a Monday home match against University City, a Wednesday home match against McCluer South-Berkeley and a Thursday road match at Jennings. All three are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Finally for Clayton last week, the Greyhounds football team suffered its worse loss of the season in a 48-0 drubbing on the road at Normandy.

The Vikings, who were desperate for a win, took control of the game early. They scored on three short runs in the first quarter and never looked back.

Senior running back Tyler Walker was held to just 69 yards rushing on Saturday. Clayton established little on offense.

The Greyhounds will look to get back on track this week with a special Thursday night matchup at Gay Field against Westminster Christian. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights football team, on the other hand, grabbed another win Friday. It beat Perryville 52-0.

Freshman running back and junior wingback P.J. Grady-Liska each had two touchdowns in the win, while quarterback threw for a score and ran for another to lead the Blue Devils to the win.

Maplewood soccer star John Barron had a big week for the Devils football team as well, kicking five extra-points and a 42-yard field goal to help seal the win over Perryville.

The Blue Devils soccer team lost both its matches last week and fell to 4-9 on the season. Barron remained one of the area leaders in scoring with 19 goals this season.

Teammate Sam Martin also has been outstanding this year. He has 13 goals and eight assists.

The girls volleyball team went 4-2 at the Crossroads Tournament, which included impressive wins over 14-4 Metro Academy on Friday, and 12-7 Brentwood on Saturday.

Mariah Russell was the star for the Blue Devils in those wins. She had 10 kills apiece in both matches.

MRH has four matches scheduled this week. The team will play on the road at St. Elizabeth’s on Monday; at Brentwood on Tuesday; at home against Crossroads on Thursday; and at home against Bayless on Friday.

All four matches are slated to begin at 5 p.m.
