Clayton Ranked No. 6 as Volleyball Playoffs Begin

District volleyball playoffs begin Monday for the Greyhounds.

Girls volleyball district playoffs begin Monday in Missouri, including a set of matchups in Missouri Class 2 District 5 that will be played at .

The Blue Devils (13-15) are the No. 2 seed in that district and will open up with a 6 p.m. matchup against Lift for Life Academy of St. Louis. Brentwood High School is the top seed.

If MRH wins, it would go on to play the Metro/Cleveland NJROTC winner Wednesday in a semifinal. The Class 2 District 5 championship game is tentatively scheduled to begin at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday at MRH.

The Greyhounds volleyball team is in Class 3 District 6 and will play at Westminster Christian Academy in West County. The team has been selected as the No. 6 seed in what looks to be a very tough, seven-team tournament.

The district’s top seed is , a team that ranks as one of the best in the state. It has a 28-5-1 record this year, a 10-match winning streak and an undefeated Metro Women’s League championship trophy on its resume this year.

Clayton (9-15-4) will open up district play Monday night with a matchup against No. 3-ranked , which has a 19-9 record this year and defeated the Greyhounds twice at the beginning of the season.

The winner of the Clayton-MICDS match would advance to the district semifinals and play the winner of the Westminster-Kennedy match at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The district championship game is planned for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Difficult week for soccer teams

The Clayton club suffered its second losing week of the season after taking tough one-goal losses against No. 1-ranked Priory and Webster Groves on Tuesday and Thursday.

Webster won in penalty kicks after the game remained tied at 1 after regulation time and two overtimes.

Clayton will celebrate Senior Day on Monday with a 5:30 p.m. home match against Whitfield. On Tuesday, the Greyhounds will close out the regular season with a road matchup against Hazelwood Central.

Maplewood Richmond Heights has a full slate of games this week before beginning district play next week against Cleveland NJROTC.

The Blue Devils will host Hancock on Tuesday, take a trip to University City on Thursday and close out the regular season Friday with a home game against Crossroads Prep.

All three of those matches are set to kick off at 4 p.m., and the Nov. 1 district opener is slated to begin at 6:15 p.m.

Clayton's first district playoff game will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 when the Greyhounds take on Westminster at Gay Field.

Football playoffs almost set

Clayton and MRH football teams find themselves in different positions heading into the final week of the regular season

MRH has clinched a spot in the state playoffs, the district championship and a first round home game. It had big wins over Carnahan and Northwest Academy in the last two weeks.

The Devils (7-2) will finish out regular season play with a game in Crystal City, MO, against Lift for Life Academy (2-7).

Clayton has been eliminated from playoff contention this season after if suffered losses to neighborhood rivals University City and the last two weeks.

The Greyhounds are 3-6 this season, and will close out this year's campaign with a matchup against MICDS, the No. 4-ranked team in Missouri Class 4.

The Rams are 9-0 this year and have clinched the district title and home-field advantage in the first round. University City and Ladue will play Thursday night at SLUH for the runner-up spot and second state playoff spot. 

Winter sports practices begin next week. Tryouts for basketball, wrestling and other teams start Oct. 31.
