Clayton High Releases 2011 Football Schedule

The Greyhounds will open their season Aug. 27 at Lutheran North.

The athletics department recently marked the official start of its 2011-12 sporting year by releasing its 2011 varsity, junior varsity and freshmen football schedules.

The first day of fall practice for the Greyhounds is set for Monday, which also will mark the official beginning of a new era for Clayton football.

New Greyhounds head coach will be taking over the program after succeeding popular former head coach on suspicion of violating Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) policy regarding workouts for middle school athletes.

Weissman, who has coached different sports at various schools around the area, won a state title as the head baseball coach at in 1996. He came to the Clayton football program as a defensive coordinator in 2010.

Weissman was promoted to head the Greyhounds program in June. Beginning on Monday morning, he will lead the ‘Hounds through a week’s worth of two-a-day practices, culminating with a team scrimmage, parent meeting and family picnic on Saturday.

Clayton also will host a four-team preseason jamboree on Aug. 19 before beginning actual game action on Aug. 27 at Lutheran High School North in St. Louis.

Kickoff for the season opener is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The junior varsity (JV) 'Hounds also will begin this season against Lutheran North. They’ll host that game at 4:15 p.m. Aug. 29 at Gay Field.

The first weekend in September will find all three Greyhounds teams taking on St. Francis Borgia from Washington, MO.

The Clayton varsity team will host its home opener against the Knights at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at Gay Field. The JV game will happen Sept. 3 at Borgia.

The Clayton freshman team also will play Sept. 3 at Borgia. That game will kickoff at 9 a.m. and will be followed by the JV game at 11 a.m.

Other matchups in September include Suburban East Conference contests against , Berkeley and the Clayton homecoming game against Jennings on Sept. 24.

The varsity team’s district playoff run will begin with a home game against University City on Oct. 14. The following week, on Oct. 21, Clayton will travel to Ladue to take on the archrival Rams.

Last season, Ladue beat Clayton twice, including 54-14 in the regular season and 35-21 in the playoffs.

This season, the Rams—featuring senior running back Daylen Dean and senior receiver Jehu Chesson—are again considered the favorites to win the district and the Suburban East.

Clayton’s Senior Day regular-season finale will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 when the Greyhounds host MICDS and top linebacker prospect Michael Scherer at Gay Field.
