Clayton Greyhounds Qualify for State Track Meet

The event happens this weekend in Jefferson City.

Making the cut for the state track tournament in Jefferson City is the dream of track and field athletes all over the state of Missouri.

And the Clayton Greyhounds boys and girls track teams have athletes who will be living that dream this weekend.

The top four placers in each event in each sectional qualify for state. The Greyhounds' boys 4 x 100 relay team, composed of Tyler Walker, Kameron Stewart, Frank May and Jeremiah Camp, qualified for state this weekend in Mexico, MO, with a third-place time of :43.87.

Johnson runs the first leg of the girls 4 x 200 team, Sams runs the second leg, Brown runs the third leg and Walker runs the fourth leg. The team’s time of 1:47 was a personal record.

“They ran well, they had to run well to get in,” said Barry Ford, who coaches the girls track team. “I’m very proud of all of them.”

Sophomores Ellie Gund and Alayna Hutchinson will attend the state meet as alternates for the 4 x 200 relay team.

The state-qualifying boys 4 x 100 relay team features a balance of grade levels. It is made up of Stewart, a senior; Camp, a junior; Walker, a sophomore; and May, a freshman.

Joseph Dillon, a junior, and senior Matthew Millett will make the trip to state as alternates in the 4 x 100.

“They’ve worked really hard, and they deserve the accomplishment,” boys assistant coach Patrick Sullivan said about the 4 x 100 relay team. “Success breeds success, and this success is a good thing.”
