Clayton Hoops: Girls Defeat Oakville 39-36 in Double Overtime

Meanwhile, the Clayton High School boys team is looking to regroup after experiencing a tough schedule during the first half of the season.

The only basketball win at l over the recent holiday break belonged to the girls team, which won a consolation semifinal game Dec. 27 at the Tournament over

That win also marked probably the Greyhounds girls’ best victory of the season: The team came from behind several times to defeat Oakville 39-36 in double overtime.

Lacei Sams, a junior, scored a team-high 10 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds during a tremendous defensive battle between the Greyhounds and Tigers.

Teammate had eight points and seven rebounds. Clayton lifted its overall record to 2-4.

But the Greyhounds couldn’t manage the same luck the next night. They let their lead get away in a 50-45 consolation championship game loss to Francis Howell.

While Clayton lost its first seven contests, the recent wins have created a brighter outlook for the second half of the season. The girls began 2012 play Wednesday with a Suburban East Conference opener against Jennings.

Boys hoops

The Greyhound boys lost both of their games in the MICDS Tournament over the break. They are 3-9 on the season.

Thus far, Clayton has had a tough schedule.

The team already has played four teams ranked in the top 10. All nine losses have come in games against teams with winning records, including MICDS Tournament losses to red-hot West County squads and .

Clayton will get back in action Friday with the start of Suburban East Conference play. The Greyhounds will travel to North County to take on Normandy.

Next week, Clayton will play in the DC Wilcutt Invitational at before gearing up for its first home game of the year Jan. 24 against .

Top scorers for the Clayton boys this year have been seniors Clayton Buchanan (17.6 points/game) and Charlie Harned (10.6 points and 2.3 assists/game).
