Clayton Girls Soccer Team Defeats Affton, 6-1

The game happened Wednesday afternoon at Centene Stadium.

The Clayton Lady Greyhounds soccer team had few problems with the Affton Lady Cougars in a Suburban East Conference contest at Centene Stadium in Clayton on Wednesday afternoon.

Clayton improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SEC with the 6-1 victory.

The Lady Greyhounds wasted little time in scoring. Forward Meg Sutter netted the first goal less than a minute into the contest. Abby Rivard’s goal with 36:18 left to play in the first half gave Clayton a 2-0 lead.

Haley Stewart scored Affton’s only goal on a penalty kick with 27:37 left to play in the first half. The goal cut Clayton’s lead to 2-1. The Lady Greyhounds maintained a 2-1 lead until halftime.

“I wasn’t impressed with the first half,” said Paul Hoelscher, Clayton's coach. “And we talked at halftime about winning 50/50 balls and creating offense. Their goalkeeper (Taylor Mosier) was making a lot of nice saves in the first half and a lot of long punts. When we wouldn’t win the 50/50 ball, we would have to track and play a lot more defense than we wanted to play. I think the difference was that we won the 50/50 balls, and that gave us more chances.”

Clayton’s offensive explosion started in the early minutes of the second half. The Lady Greyhounds challenged the Lady Cougars and put five shots on goal in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Allison Bayly scored a goal on a penalty kick with 21:53 left to play in the second half to make the score 3-1.

Petra Petermann, Karley Woods, and Clair Laufketter all scored goals in the second half. Woods assisted in three Clayton goals.

“Our goal as a team was to keep our defense strong, to get the ball out quickly, and make meaningful passes and go wide,” Woods said. “I think we accomplished that well. Another goal was to keep up our energy. It’s been a problem for us at times, but today after the penalty kick ... we picked things up and were hungry to score.”

Clayton had 14 shots on goal while Affton had just four. Affton fell to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the SEC with the loss.

“We came out very flat,” said Brian Mesplay, Affton's coach. “We had a tough overtime game last night where we lost in penalty kicks to Orchard Farm, and we’re a young team. I think we let that loss hang over us today.”

Orchard Farm defeated Affton 3-2 on Tuesday.
