Clayton Dominates in Softball, Tennis; MRH Volleyball Team Wins

Clayton's softball and tennis teams stayed hot last week, while the Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball team snapped a losing streak.

The red-hot girls softball team enjoyed another fantastic week on the diamond, claiming wins in all three of its matchups last week.

Rain canceled Clayton's game against on Wednesday. But that put little damper on the Greyhounds’ spirits, especially after the club celebrated a dramatic come-from-behind win over on Sept. 12.

The visiting Saints jumped all over Clayton freshman pitcher Raime Cohen for six runs in the first three innings and appeared bound to end the Greyhounds’ early season winning streak.

But the resilient Greyhounds rallied back with a vengeance, scoring a single run in their half of the fourth inning, then two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. They finished off the thrilling comeback with two more runs in the seventh for an incredible 7-6 victory.

The following day, Clayton knocked off Normandy 28-4 in only three innings. It finished the week with a 6-2 win over rival at on Friday.

The Greyhounds have four games scheduled this week, including home games on Monday against ; on Wednesday against Rosati-Kain; and on Thursday against .

Clayton’s lone road game is on Tuesday, when the Greyhounds will play at the Affton Athletic Association in South County.

The first pitch for all four Greyhounds matchups this week is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

The Clayton girls tennis team also had a big week, winning three of the four meets it played. That included an exciting 4-3 match victory over rival Ladue on Friday.

The Greyhounds are 7-1 this season and have meets scheduled this week on Thursday against , and on Friday against .

The Clayton boys soccer team is 4-3 this season after going 1-1 last week in games against Borgia and Ladue.

On Tuesday, the Greyhounds won a 1-0 thriller against Borgia on senior Gabe Jacus’ second goal of the season. But hey were on the opposite end of a 1-0 game Thursday against Ladue.

This week, Clayton is scheduled to play in a tournament at Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis, with pool play games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and a possible championship game on Friday or Saturday.

The Greyhounds’ next home game is scheduled for Sept. 26, when Westminster Christian will visit Gay Field at 5:30 p.m.

The one Clayton team that didn’t do so well last week was the girls volleyball team, which went 0-3 in matches against St. Elizabeth’s, Brentwood, and Ladue.

The Greyhounds are now 2-9-3 this season but hope to improve with games against Lutheran North, and Normandy this week.

The boys soccer team not only defeated Brentwood last week but also won big against Metro on Thursday, combining for eight goals in the two wins.

Senior striker John Barron netted his second hat trick of the season in the Blue Devils’ 4-0 win over Brentwood.

He’ll be looking for his third, three-goal game of the year this week when MRH plays a series of games in the Hillsboro High School Tournament.

The MRH girls volleyball team ended its four-game losing streak with wins last week over Valley Park and Normandy.

The Devils took two rather spirited decisions over the Hawks and Vikings last Tuesday and Wednesday, with Mariah Russell and Amber Sinclair leading the way both nights.

This week, MRH has three midweek matches scheduled. They’ll play at Bayless on Tuesday; at Jennings on Wednesday; and at Hancock on Thursday.
