Burroughs Strikes Early in Soccer Win Over Clayton

The game happened Friday afternoon at MICDS.

The Bombers soccer team had few problems with the Greyhounds in Friday afternoon’s non-conference contest at MICDS. The Bombers won, 2-0.

Burroughs succeeded in making plays. The Bombers (1-1) had 10 shots on goal while Clayton (1-1) managed just two. One of Clayton’s shots, made by senior Maaman Hossayrami, came four minutes before the end of the game.

“They really outplayed us,” Clayton coach Tom Redmond said. “We were trying, but we couldn’t get into a rhythm. We had a really ... nice attempt at the end with that shot from Maaman (Hossayrami). The goalie saved it. All in all, they just got the better of us.”

They played during a temperature of 103 degrees.

“It was a tough day to play,” Redmond said. “I think one of the things they did a little better than us was hold the ball and pass the ball. If you’re going to play in this type of heat, it helps to be the team that’s possession instead of the team that’s chasing.”

Burroughs sophomore Ryan Keeney struck just five minutes into the game. Keeney fired off a shot 25 yards from the goal that found the back of the net. Francisco Sanchez, a sophomore, scored the Bombers’ second goal 35 minutes into the second half. Simon Sandler passed the ball to Sanchez and he fired off a shot 15 yards from the goal that landed in the back of the net.

“I wanted to beat the (goal)keeper,” Sanchez said. “I didn’t care if I got hit, I just wanted it to go in.”

Bombers coach Allan Trzecki agreed that his team made quality plays against the Greyhounds. He also mentioned the water breaks taken during the game because of the heat.

“I think we had a greater awareness to make sure we were going to finish the game,” he said. “Having the extra intervals helped us because he had just three subs. Then we went down a player and we only had two subs. It allowed us to stay fresh, focused, and stay hydrated. We were able to move the ball from side to side and create some opportunities.”

He also said scoring so early proved helpful.

“I think one thing that was different was that we talked to the guys after the game (against Ladue) on Tuesday, and I don’t think we attacked the goal enough,” Trzecki said. “We were content to keep possession and pass that ball sideways and backward, but we weren’t making ourselves difficult to play against. We said if we get a scoring opportunity based on the condition of the field, we need to take advantage of that and he (Keeney) exercised the freedom to shoot.”
