'Bullseye On Our Back': MRH Faces Conference Opener

The Maplewood Richmond Heights Blue Devils football team will play the Potosi Trojans on Friday night.

On Friday night, will travel to Potosi to play the 0-2 Trojans in the Blue Devils' first conference game of the year.

MRH coach Brandon Gregory, whose Blue Devils are looking for a win to improve to 2-1, knows MRH can’t take the game for granted.

“They’re 0-2, but everybody is looking at the bullseye on our back,” Gregory said. “Everybody is going to give us their best game.”

MRH beat the Trojans . After two games this year, MRH is averaging 45 points per game against Potosi’s 14. MRH has allowed 18 points a game on average and Potosi has allowed 33.5.

The Trojans’ main playmaker is junior Dusty Wideman, who has tallied three touchdowns. He’s rushed 43 times for 198 yards and totals 61 yards receiving.

Potosi senior quarterback Trevor Cain has passed 34 times for 187 yards. Senior receiver Jeremy Malugen has 65 yards in four receptions. Junior Dakota Glore has 19 tackles and one sack.

MRH said the game will be tough. “They run a lot of play action. Our (defensive backs) can’t go to sleep,” he said. “Everybody has to hit their gaps.”

Junior quarterback Kahlid Hagens is the Devils’ biggest passing and running threat, with 264 yards passing and 175 yards rushing this season. Freshman Keely is second in rushing, going 161 yards in 19 tries in one game against MICDS and junior P.J. Grady-Liska follows with 66 yards in 15 carries.

Senior receiver Kashon Hagens leads the team with 101 yards in six receptions, and sophomore Cortland Brocks is right behind with 98 yards, also with six receptions.

“We started out with the loss to Country Day and I told the guys we got to get the momentum back,” Gregory said. “So , and hopefully we can keep the momentum rolling, and keep rolling through the season.”

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Potosi. A map and directions to Potosi are available on the MRH School District website.
