No Boards for Greyhound Boys; Girls Pick Up First Win

Clayton, Maplewood Richmond Heights hockey, basketball, hockey teams get ready for holiday matchups.

With just a few more days of school left until the holiday break, some local high school sports teams find themselves in practice mode this week, with few games scheduled until holiday tournament time begins the day after Christmas.

Most teams saw some action, with lots of mixed results, except for the boys basketball team, which had the week off and spent its time practicing every day after school.

MRH (3-3) will do the same again this week, as it has no games on the schedule and won’t be back in action on the court until next week, when the Blue Devils will travel down to Poplar Bluff for the nationallyrenowned Poplar Bluff Holiday Invitational Tournament.

The boys basketball team fell to a surprising 3-7 this season after going 1-2 last week, with a thrilling 70-65 home win over Lutheran South and a pair of road losses at MICDS and Whitfield.

Senior scoring machine Clayton Buchanan had 29 points in the Lutheran South win and 23 points in a narrow defeat at MICDS, but had just nine points in a 13-point loss against Whitfield.

One of the problems for the Greyhounds early in the season is their lack of height and size inside.

Clayton has been getting pounded on the boards, evidenced by the fact that diminutive junior guard Tyler Walker—all 5 foot 8 inches of him—is the Hounds’ leading rebounder this season, at 3.5 rebounds per game.

The Hounds are playing in the MICDS Tournament, and will open up at 6 p.m. Thursday night with a game against Westminster Christian Academy.

In girls basketball news, the Clayton girls got their first win of the season last Friday night, when they defeated University City 36-23 in the Hounds’ first home game of the season.

It wasn’t a particularly pretty ballgame with no one from either team scoring in double figures, but Clayton did have three girls (Briah Arms, Ali Planells, and Amelia Stubblefield) score six points each, and another three girls (Stephanie Avery, Carmen Planells, and Lacei Sams) tally four points each.

Stubblefield had a big night on the boards, grabbing 14 rebounds for the Greyhounds, while Carmen Plannels added eight rebounds of her own and led the defense with four steals.

The MRH girls team fell to 3-3 on the year, after losing its only game last week at Whitfield High School.

Senior guard Antonia Lee continues to be the Devils’ leading scorer, with a 14 points per game average, while also hitting on 47.8 percent of her three-point attempts.

When MRH gets back on the court next week, it will be playing in the Cardinal Ritter Christmas Classic, which begins at Cardinal Ritter High in St. Louis Monday.

The Clayton wrestling team is undefeated (4-0) in duals this year.

The Hounds had impressive showings at two events last week, defeating MRH in a dual meet last Friday and taking fourth place in the Brentwood Invitational on Saturday.

Seniors Montel Harris (182 pounds) and Roger Taylor (195 pounds) won their weight-class championships at the Brentwood Invitational, while teammate Josh Hellm took second in the heavyweight class.

And finally, the Clayton ice hockey team suffered a loss and a tie in two games last week, taking a 3-0 defeat against Lutheran South last Friday, and a skating to a 3-3 draw against Ft. Zumwalt North on Saturday.

The Hounds are 3-6-2 this season and currently sit in seventh place in the Mid-States Hockey Association’s Suburban Central Conference standings.

Clayton has just two games left in 2011, one at 8:45 p.m. Friday against Parkway Central at the Webster Groves Ice Rink, and one at 9:45 p.m., Dec. 30 matchup against St. Mary’s at the Affton Ice Rink.

Senior Gabe Jacus remains Clayton’s top scorer this season, with 18 goals and nine assists, while goalkeeper Austin Gais is second in the area in total saves with 287 stops in nine games this year.
