Lady Greyhounds Fall at Home Against MICDS Lady Rams

The Clayton girls lost to the Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School team, 40-15.

A poor second half doomed the Clayton Lady Greyhounds' on Dec. 14 against the Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School Lady Rams.

The Lady Rams walked away with a 40-15 victory in the non-conference contest at Clayton High School's Stuber Gymnasium. MICDS outscored Clayton 23-4 in the second half.

"They played well, and I don't want to take anything away from them," Clayton coach Heath Kent said. "But we have to be more aggressive on offense. You can't score four points in the second half and expect to beat anyone, let alone a good team like MICDS."

MICDS played mostly zone defenses in the first half but hit Clayton with a variety of defenses in the second half. Lady Rams coach Scott Small said he thought defense was the key to the explosive second half.

"We switched up on them a lot," Small said. "We went man (to man) late, and then we'd throw in a little match up or a little trap. We like to switch up defenses and change what we're doing."

He also said his team displayed more confidence in the second half.

"We've had trouble settling them down in the first half," Small said. "We're young on the floor. Sometimes we play three freshmen on the floor. It's getting them settled down and organized."

But it was freshman Emily Kyman who led MICDS' offense against Clayton with 19 points, nine of which came off of threes.

"I thought Emily did a good job of stepping up," Small said. "She's anything other than a true freshman at this level. She did a good job of running us on the offensive end, and hitting some big shots, and getting some big steals."

Kyman said her team "came together more and had more energy" in the second half.  Cameron Jackson added eight points for the Lady Rams.

The contest was a low-scoring affair in the first quarter: The game was tied at two, again at four, and again at six, with MICDS grabbing a slim 8-6 advantage at the end of the quarter. The Lady Rams went to work building a bigger lead in the second quarter. Caitlin Condie nailed back-to-back free throws with seven seconds left to play to give MICDS a 17-8 lead, its biggest advantage in the second quarter.

But the Greyhounds pushed back at the end of the second quarter, and Iesha Powell's buzzer trey cut the Lady Rams' lead to 17-11.

The Lady Greyhounds drop to 0-7 with the loss. The Lady Rams climb to 4-0.
