Girls Hoops: MRH Grabs Consolation Championship in Whitfield

A thrilling Blue Devils win last week over the rival Brentwood Eagles gave Maplewood Richmond Heights High School the consolation championship.

In girls hoops last week, won two of the three games it played and took home the consolation championship at the Whitfield Invitational. It came after a thrilling 39-38 victory over archrival in the consolation championship game.

Antonia Lee, a senior who had a career-high 24 points in the semifinals against St. Elizabeth’s, made 17 points in the consolation final. MRH trailed 27-12 at halftime but then outscored Brentwood 20-2 in the third quarter to spark itself to the win.

MRH will be back at Whitfield for its only game of the week at 4:30 p.m. Friday. It will be a nonconference matchup against the Warriors, who were the runners-up in last week’s tournament.

The Clayton girls basketball team lost its only game of the week and fell to 0-6 on the season after a 53-50 loss at Ritenour on Thursday.  

Stephanie Avery had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and teammate had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Greyhounds. But it wasn’t enough to get past a pesky pack of Ritenour Huskies.

This week, Clayton has games at Lutheran South on Monday; No. 6-ranked on Tuesday; and University City at home on Friday.
