Fontbonne Awarded for Partnership with St. Louis County Schools

The Clayton university puts education students into classrooms through its work with the Brentwood School District and the Special School District of St. Louis County.

A partnership that puts education students from 's into St. Louis County classrooms is the recipient of a 2011 Models of Excellence Award.

The Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education administers the award.

“This partnership has grown from a small, middle school initiative to a district-wide enterprise, encompassing pre-school, elementary, middle and high school,” stated Bill Freeman, dean of education, in a Dec. 22 news release from the university. “The reciprocal benefits are compelling: Fontbonne pre-service teachers are able to see real schools in action; students from participating schools are tutored and mentored by pre-service teachers. It is truly a win/win collaboration.”    

The project started in 1995 as a collaboration between the university's Teacher Education Unit and the . It expanded in 2007 to include the .

Fontbonne representatives will receive recognition in February at the education association's annual conference in Chicago.
