Emily Berty Honored for Advising Students About College

The Richmond Heights resident is a college counselor at Kirkwood High School.

Richmond Heights resident Emily Berty was in the midst of one of the most hectic weeks of the school year when an unexpected package arrived on her desk in the guidance office.

The package contained an award recognizing Berty, a college counselor at (KHS), for her outstanding work helping students navigate the college selection process.

Berty spends her days meeting with and advising juniors and seniors at KHS about their college choices. She also is the coordinator for the school’s AP classes.

“I had no idea that anyone had nominated me,” Berty said. “It was a neat respite from the chaos of the week.”

Berty, 29, is one of 11 recipients of the award called “Counselors That Change Lives.” It is given by the nonprofit organization Colleges That Change Lives, made up of 40 liberal arts colleges that students might overlook in the selection process.
