Clayton Teacher Named Mo. History Teacher of 2013

The Gilder Lehrman Institute bestowed the designation onto Wydown Middle School sixth-grade teacher April Fulstone.

Wydown Middle School (WMS) Sixth-Grade Social Studies and Literacy Teacher April Fulstone has been named  best-of-the-best. 

She was recently announced as the 2013 Missouri History Teacher of the Year.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, along with Preserve America  gave Fulstone the designation based on her teaching techniques including use of primary documents in the classroom, the level of inspiration she provides to her students and her career achievements in education.

“It is a great honor for me to receive this award, but it is really a testament to the educators who surround me in the School District of Clayton, ” Fulstone said in the a district statement. “My experienced colleagues in the Social Studies department have mentored and encouraged my growth as a history teacher.

"We have an excellent spirit of collaboration at Wydown Middle School as a building. "

Fulstone has been teaching in the district for nine years and said she is "fortunate to work in a district that encourages creativity, content depth and professional development."

A panel of teachers, administrators and academics from across Missouri select each year's recipient. Fulstone will receive a $1,000 award, a certificate of recognition, an archive of books and historical resources presented in her name to the WMS library and an invitation to attend a 2014 Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar.
