Clayton Semifinalists Named for National Academic Awards

The Clayton High School students are in the running for scholarships as part of the National Achievement Scholarship Program and National Merit Scholarship Program.

A number of students have been named semifinalists for two prestigious awards.

Khalani James has been named a semifinalist for the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program. More than 1,600 black high school students received the distinction out of 160,000 juniors who requested consideration, a news release states. About 1,300 students are expected to become finalists in January and will compete for approximately 800 scholarships with a cumulative value of more than $2.4 million.

Meanwhile, more than 20 Clayton students are among approximately 16,000 people named semifinalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program, a news release states.

Both awards recognize academic excellence.

Those named National Merit finalists in February will be able to compete for more than $34 million in scholarships.

Winners of that scholarship will be announced in four stages starting in April and ending in July.
