Civil Rights Leader Rev. Billy Kyles to Speak at MRH

He was the last person to spend time with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before his assassination.

The man who last spent time with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before his assassination will speak to students in the in February.

Speaking engagements by the Rev. Billy Kyles will happen Feb. 2 in the MRH High School Theater, Assistant Superintendent Karen Hall said Thursday. The district's African-American Community Advisory Council is sponsoring the event.

Kyles met with King before his death in Memphis. He will visit with students during the day and make a presentation that will be open to the public at night.

The district was able to arrange for the event with help from Assistant Principal Michael Maclin of MRH High School. Maclin knows Kyles.

Educators hope the event will help youth who have lost sight of history learn and grow.

"You cannot move forward if you do not know your past," Hall said.
