Chess We Can: MRH Youth Take First Place at Tournament

Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary School topped 10 other teams to win the Gateway Chess League Fall Open in November.

The chess team at took first place Nov. 19 in its first tournament of the year.

The win at the Gateway Chess League Fall Open placed the MRH team atop 10 other teams in the 6th Grade and Under Division, a news release from the MRH School District states. The team's trophy has been placed in the elementary school library.

Fourth-grader Josh Goldberg received a medal for the total number of points he earned.

In addition to Josh, the tournament team featured:

  • Salem Bussey
  • Gabe Leavy
  • Mason Kramer
  • Malik Stewart
  • Freeman Reinhold


Ben Simon began coaching the team in 2006 as a college freshman.

“In chess, never judge the playing strength of your opponent by what he
looks like,” Simon stated in the release. “If you do, that 5-year-old is going to
embarrass you.”

The tournament happened at Washington Middle School in Washington, MO.
