A Retreat with a Water Front View

Unknown to or forgotten by most area residents, a number of hidden gems are perched along “the bluffs” of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.  From historic period revival manses to mid-century Wright-inspired contemporaries, the bluffs appeal to some of the most esoteric home-seekers. 

I was privileged this week to tour the unique home of a Saint Louis area transplant whose home offers views that rival those of her European upbringing and the architecture of her years in California.  Seldom does a bluff-top property offer equally overwhelming views from both the grounds and from within the property.  Designed by Kirkwood architect Raymond T Cayse, this home was originally built for the Hess Family.  This custom home offers views from throughout the two levels of this 6,000-square-foot-plus, 6 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom, atrium ranch.  Although closed for the season during my visit, the swimming pool and water features are clearly the heart of the property during Summer months and during weekend visits by friends and family.  The home is perfectly sited for inspiring views throughout the year whether entertaining or meditating. 

Our rivers have always been “working” rivers and our waterfronts are, for better or worse, marked by our industrial heritage;  as a result, prime properties often take an extra step to reach.   However, in my opinion, these factors only add to the primal integrity of the locations.  This is a property I would like to visit again - especially with a prospective buyer.
