Police Chief, City Forester Leaving Clayton This Year

The long-time city employees are leaving the City of Clayton as part of a DROP program.

The City of Clayton will be losing two familiar faces with a combined 80-plus years of experience working for the city.

Police Chief Thomas Byrne and Forester Doug "Bull" Durham are retiring in 2013 as part of a city cost-cutting initiative called DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program), according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Post reports the voluntary retirements will save the city approximately $200,000 toward reducing recurring costs in the city budget by $1.3 million.

“Our goal will be that most community members will not perceive any difference in service, and those few who do will not be dramatically impacted,” City Manager Craig Owens told the Post. “It is no secret that public safety is always a very high priority and will continue to be.”
